Postby jasonc2861 » Tue Apr 09, 2013 1:32 pm

Hey has anyone ever tried ovaltine as a nutrient?its full of vitamins,,I know it would prob cost more than tomato paste etc..what are your thoughts on this and how would you do it??
I'd go maybe 1 x 350 gram tub of ovaltine to 100 grams of lowans yeast,5 kgs sugar,25 ltrs water.might give it a try,,see if it works.. :geek:

Well I thought I'd give it a bash, and have to say the yeast loved it!did as above :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Starting fg was 1.078 finished at 0.993,took 8 days all up,was finished after 4 mind you.
Ended up with two .900 ml jars and one 1.75 ltr jug of 40%alc after some vicious cuts. :handgestures-thumbupleft: :D

I guess you're using your reflux still, I wonder how it would compare with TPW on a pot still in terms of the flavours that carry over. If I had the time I'd probably give it a shot myself.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

How did you decide on 350 g of ovaltine? Is it similar in nutritional info from the pack of tomato paste?

Well giving the ovaltine wash a crack:

8LB Sugar
0.5 Tbl Citric Acid
6 oz Ovaltine
1 Tbl Distillers Yeast
1 Tbl Yeast Nutrient
Topped with water to 5 Gal

Starting SG at 90F: 1.084
Starting SG Corrected: 1.088

Nothing happening yet, I perhaps under did the yeast, so maybe off to a slow start.

Will distill in the Pot Still, a little chocolate flavor carryover would not be a bad thing

Well, I think the Ovaltine wash is stalled, both 5 gallon buckets are doing almost nothing. There's a small bit of froth on top, you can taste some alcohol in it, but it still tastes sweet.

Not sure what might be wrong, but my nephew had the heat cranked up in the brew room so his sugar-corn would bubble like crazy. I checked the ovaltine and it was HOT, didn't get a temp on it but it was uncomfortably hot. I'm thinking it overheated and killed off the yeast?

Not certain what to do to try and kick start it again, I'm thinking:

1: get an SG reading on it and see where the ABV is at this point.
2: get a PH meter and check the PH and adjust with citric acid or sodium bicarbonate if needed.
3: Hit it with another dose of distiller's yeast.

Thoughts?

maybe time to invest in a laser thermometer - the ones you point and shoot to get temps.

besides that, what you've written those three steps look sound and are what i'd follow (minus the ph check)
