Drop it down to four plates to retain flavour. Five will strip.to much flavour that you want to keep :O)
With some washes people aloso drop to three plate, im in the process of making my collumn able. :handgestures-thumbupleft

Will give that a bash then

Thanks for all the tips! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I run mine with 4 plates to get some flavour retained. I keep the 5 plates plus the copper packing for when I'm making a neutral.

Just realised I forgot about the copper roll packing in my last couple of runs, so it has been 4 plates plus copper!!

Still enjoying my few bottles of white dog, straight off the boiler!!

I've found a source for cheap cracked corn, does anyone think that I could do a modified cfw with standard recipe plus 1kg of my cracked corn that's booked for x amount of time and then used in conjunction with standard recipe? I'm also in the process of sourcing enzymes for my eventual AG and am thinking a dash of enzyme with the corn and correct mash technique could be a good stepping stone. Thoughts??

Have a go. We did, bit too early for our level of understanding and it worked half the time... a lot of work, tho!

Mind you, we didn't go small! Spent all day doing 200L and got very little to show for it... Like I said, it was too much for our limited knowledge ... you can only have a go an learn from it!

If you're doing an original recipe CFW I don't think the extra corn will help much. If you are adding extras (rye, malt etc) some cracked corn will help to keep the corn flavour as the base flavour. Whichever way you go, let us know the results :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers Zak! Wash taste and smell is really good with the malt and wheatbix addition. As well as raw sugar with its vanilla scent!
My recipe:
950g Kellogg cornflakes
200g wheatbix
500g malt extract
5.5kg white sugar
2kg Raw sugar
7l backset
Us05 ale yeast

Only achieved an sg of 1060 on gen 2 but oh well it smells awesome and I ended up with nearly 10l low wines from first gen 45l strip I ran today so I'm stoked

1060 is alright mate, you'll get a better flavour carryover with a slightly less alcoholic wash :handgestures-thumbupleft:

So I had a second attempt at CFW last weekend since my first attempt was less than successful

This run seemed far more successful, and out of 100L of 9.7%ABV wash I ended up with about 2L of hearts @ 88%ABV. The yield didn't seem very high, but I was pretty conservative with my cuts.

One thing I was wondering about was the creation of ongoing generations... I've kept about 11 litres of backset from my run in anticipation of my next batch, but what is the purpose of re-using the old cornflakes? Is it more of an economy thing since all of the flavour hasn't been drained from the cereal after one use? Will there be any impact on the finished product if I use new cornflakes for each run but add the backset from each prior generation as per the original instructions?

SOmethings not right there mate, you should get a lot more hearts out of 100L! I hope you kept all of the 'feints'?

I certainly did ;-)

For each 50L batch I ran I discarded 500ml as foreshots, then collected in 300ml increments. I knew tails had set in once the ABV dropped suddenly (which happened on jar number 8 both times). I continued collecting for a further four jars as the ABV continued to drop. This left me with 3.6L worth of distillate from each run ranging from ~90%ABV down to about 65%ABV for each batch.

Tasting each jar, the first few jars were pretty rough, so i set them aside. The next four jars tasted good, but you could definitely taste a drop in quality once the ABV started to drop from the eighth so I cut those too. That left me with 4 jars from each batch of what I considered to be the best tasking product. I probably could've got an extra jar on either side for each of the batches (giving me an extra 1.2 litres) but I decided to operate on the side of caution for this run...

How fast were you taking off the distillate?
100L has a max of 10L of ethanol.
I think maybe your cuts were too big and tou ran too fast smearing some tails a bit early.

Foreshots only need to be 200ml provided you have good fractional compression in your still.

Then collect in 200ml cuts at about 1-2L/hr.
It only takes a few parts per million of tails for you to taste them.

400g cornflakes to flour
500g rye malt cracked to flour
80g caramunich I cracked to flour
250g lme
4.5kg sugar
Tbl dap
1/2 teaspoon citric acid
Lowans yeast
Fermenting at 33c and bubbling like mad

Had a first taste of this last night, 4l @ 63 on 2 american oak med char 5 star staves, bloody fantastic. Time is still needed for the oak and spirit flavours to blend and really knit as they are still distinct -I reckon 12-18 months start to finish will be perfect. I like mine neat or on a chunk of ice, it would mix fine now. I can really recommed using cfw as a base for experimenting with other malts. My cherry wood smoked malt version smells like candied bacon, can't wait to see how it turns out.

In the original recipe it says 750 grams , is it ok to use 2 boxes for more flavour ( 1.5 kg of cornflakes) in the 45 litres of water
