Rule of thumb max 1kg to 5l water. Not sure much lme equates to a kg sugar..

Substitute a kg of sugar for the LME.

Out of a 40L ferment which I have chugging away at the moment. Is a 200ml fores cut going to be more than enough?

What you don't catch in the fores is only going to be early heads anyway mate. I take 500 ml of fores/heads out of every 50L wash before I start collecting in my 200ml jars.

200ml of fores plus cutting roughly 1-1.5L of heads then tails and you'll have a nice whiskey

I've actually been thinking about doing this, I don't really see the point of taking early heads. Even as feints.

Thanks mate, I think we might havea very similar still and boiler setup so I might try it this way. Challenge will be leaving it to age!

So my cfw has been on for nearly two weeks and i just checked the sg and it's 1180. It's not completely stopped fizzing but is definitely slowed right down.

I've ran a heat belt and it's been between 20-25 deg the whole time.

Does it just need longer or is something not right? I felt sure it would be done by now.

Forgot to add, chucked in the alcometer and it's sitting so high none of the numbers are even in the liquid.

Tastes like sour flatish beer and not much in the way of sweetness at all, reading taken at 18 deg C

Any ideas?

Sounds done, you'll need a hydrometer to check sg of washes, your alcometer won't work.
But going by taste is good too. Once all the sugar is consumed it won't be sweet and won't continue to ferment.

Isn't the SG reading I got too high though?

The sg can't be 1180 mate... Got a pic of your hydrometer in the wash?

Take a photo on your phone , then screenshot that photo then upload that screenshot.
Hope that helps, as for doing it on a computer I dont know. I'm no pumpkin farmer but when it comes to that thing I'm about as useful as a shit flavoured chuppa chup.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
