That's a 725g box the other one woody posted about is 920g. Works out the 920 g is still slightly cheaper per kilo.

Hey Lads,

Just thought I would share an interesting observation from our blending session last night. Firstly, we have noticed that generally speaking, we never go anywhere near the first three jars off the still, plus the fores of course, so for this run, I figured I would run a big jar, about 5 or 600ml, hard to estimate, but a paul Newman’s spaghetti sauce jar full, then went to about 150ml for 5 jars. From there back to normal, being about 250ml. Not very interesting but it might make sense soon. Might I say!!!

So with the tasting, all went as usual, using a spoon, watered a spoonful down in a glass to have a good smell and a taste from the middle toward tails then toward heads.

Flavour was thin in the middle, it is only gen 1, and just a wee bit of prickle. Nice prickle, not nasty heads prickle but it was a surprise to say the least. As we got to about jar 7, we only took 10 as we were down to 50%, no more prickle, and even less taste, then jar 8 tasted like shite. Well that’s tails we thought, but what’s 9 like? Bejeesus! It was the best darn white dog we have ever tried. Sweet, a little bit of corn, a little bit of a buttery feel. Really very nice! Jar ten? Well we thought at the time of the run that it was tails, so it was another fairly big jar full. What a mistake!!! It was a case of I didn’t mind it, but my mate could taste wet cardboard. If that had been three normal jars, I’m sure we would have got two more to add to the keepit pot!

A similar thing happened back toward the heads, jar 3 was prickly as all get out, but smelt really good, and jar two was smooth and full of flavors like corn and caramel. Four was just like 5, a little bit prickly with sweetness and a hint of corn.

Amazing to me how the flavors change back and forth when there is no change in anything in the process from jar to jar.

Sorry for the long post, but I had to share with somebody who might be interested. My wife couldn’t give a rats arse! :laughing-rolling:

Hi Guys, I have a question. Just started CFW recently, doing ~27L ferments. 4 kg sugar, 70g lowans, 400g corn flakes first run. Doing 2nd gen, 4 kg sugar, 150g corn flakes, same for 3rd gen. Haven't been able to get the 2nd or 3rd gens to kick off without adding new yeast. Have been careful not to get the new run too hot during mixing, add 14L cool water before starting & I use a Fluke multimeter with calibrated probe to monitor temperature. Add 3L backset & go from there. Any tips appreciated.

Hey Hooky me two mate. Just done gen 2 but had use more yeast to get it going. I put a couple of litres of water in the mash after racking off ferment. Then added water and backset (with sugar and flakes) temp didn't get above 34c, but no action. I'm just wondering is there something I've missed as well.

How much backset you fellas using. My money is on ph being to low. Acid level to high. See stuck ferments link in my sig for ideas on bringing ph up.

Yep watch the backset it will cause problems if your not careful. I bought a cheap digital ph meter off ebay just help diagnose these problems. Quite a handy tool to have in the kit.

Also be careful when putting the backset in that you don't scorch the yeast. I always fill my fermenter with cold water first leaving just enough room for my hot backset and sugar. Also don't stir up the trub (grains flakes yeast etc) off the bottom till the hot backset is in, my theory is that the real hot stuff will cool before it hits the yeast. Some may die but there should be plenty still on the bottom, hungry and ready to go :handgestures-thumbupleft:

We grabbed a probe analogue one from bunnings for about $10. It’s designed to test soil but works like a charm.

Without reading through 32 pages, does this recipe scale up to 100 liters ok? Losing my patience with UJJSM.
Dont want to do half runs and want to get something at least fermenting for if I get time to do a run.

I assume it would mate. I scaled my ujssm up to 200 litres and it went fine.
What's happening with your uj?
