Can I ask a stupid question here, are you mashing the grains or do you just throw them in for a bit of flavour like a UJ? And if so, like a UJ does it require a few gens to get a depth of flavour?

I'm nowhere near this just yet, I'm just putting my first wash on tonight, but when I get the hang of it I think this is going to be a recipe I jump on!

It may cost a little more but it still costs SFA. Sounds like a real nice recipe with the caramalt.

Grovebrewery start working your way through the beginers section here http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewforum.php?f=57.
Strip run generally done on a pot still run it as fasf as you can and rip the alcohol out, you end up with a very raw alcohol. Spirit run is when you run slow and do "cuts". Check out kiwi stillers guide here http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2859 :handgestures-thumbupleft:

3 or 4 stripping runs and a single spirit run will always be better than single runs.

:text-+1: You can do a slow single run if you want but you get a better yield and flavour if you do 3 or 4 strip runs then a spirit run.

3 or 4 strip runs on a single wash? Seems like a lot, wouldn't that strip too much flavor? I only ever did 1 strip then spirit. So I would strip each wash, store them until I had enough then put them all together for a run through for a spirit run making sure it’s below 40% before it goes into the boiler of course.

Pretty sure that's what he means, woody. Strip 3 or 4 washes then spirit run the low wines.

Thought that would be the case but thought we'd better clarify it to avoid confusion. There are so many ways of doing things to get different results and who knows that may have been working for some.

Sorry for the confusion :?

or even a pot still. just wondering weather you found a slow single pass a drinkable product. not looking to do further washes of this so was wsnting to make something usable from this 25l wash

I should imagine a slow pot still run would maximise flavour carry over while ensuring a large hearts cut. Time on oak is still essential and selecting cuts jars from the tails (even more time on oak) may also prove useful. I don't know much about detuned bokas but I would recommend the pot still any day for this wash (unless you can get your hands on a bubbler).

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

You can but you will have to go slow, personally I have never had anything nice from a single run of any recipe except TPW and it improves immensely from a strip and spirit run.

You would probably be better off stripping the wash and then diluting the low wines to a suitable volume for a spirit run.
Rather than just doing 1 slow run.
