roughly it's 5kg sugar, 250g wheat germ to make up a 30L wash.

2.2 lbs to 1kg
US gallons are just under 4 liters I think.

28 grams to a ounce.
16 ounce to a pound.

When I first started out I used DWWG quite a lot for doing neutrals, it was a really good end result. I believe it's quite nice once run through a pot still too, but have not tried that because my rum and whiskey keeps me busy these days.

Now, when it says be careful - how do you cover it in a standard 30 lt ferment tub with screw lid and air lock, just a cloth till things settle?

Woot! Brewed my first "real" wash last night, a DWWG upscaled to 50L. I used 9kg sugar, 1kg wheat germ (the original recipe upscaled to 900g, but the stuff comes in 500g bags, so I just bought two and chucked the lot in), and 4tsp citric acid. I had to boil it in two batches 'cause I only have a 20L pot, I boiled each batch for an hour (though I read later on HD that it really needs the full 90 mins to extract everything from the wheat germ - whoops..), chucked them in my 80L drum/fermenter, topped up to 50L with cold water (I just used tap water), waited for it to cool to 25 degrees C (12 hours!!), aerated with my custom built wash aerator (see my earlier post :lol: ) then pitched 140g Lowans bakers yeast. No airlock on my drum, I just rested the lid on loose, and two hours later it's already going nuts! I forgot to take a SG reading though, oh well...

where do i find wheat germ at to try this wash as i'd like to try it

Some supermarkets stock it in their organics/grains section pricey though or health food shops and there is always the grain/fodder store and they always seem to be very helpfull, and if your lucky they may swap grain for a bottle or two, barter is a wonderful thing.

It's pricey in the organic aisle, but cheap in the breakfast cereal aisle :lol: should only cost a couple of bucks a bag.

Yep, as buck said. Homebrand woolies or coles in with the oats and stuff for cereal. Probably $1 or so a bag.

How do the characteristics for DWWG compare to a TPW?

Why/when would you use one over the other?

I've tried both. They cost about the same in raw ingredients, they ferment out in about the same amount of time, and if you're making vodka you won't notice the difference. As Mac said, the DWWG has a scotch-y sort of taste when you pot still it (if you don't mind a cheap scotch like Vat 69 it's actually not bad), not sure what TPW is like out of the pot still, I've never tasted it! Main difference for mine is the time - DWWG needs an hour or so of boiling then wait for it to cool to pitching temp, TPW you just throw everything in the fermenter and walk away, job done.

I'll give the DWWG a try, just for the experience, but I think I'll stick to the TPW for the time being. It's just too easy! :)

..and having just read Busmans Vat69 comment/reference(coupled with McStills 30l metric conversion of course and my passion for 'all things whisky')... think I'm gonna try DWWG!

I've only ran DWWG once before, put it through the column and was a disappointed the column did it's job, as it made a really neutral vodka. This time I've got another 50+liters clearing and will run it through the pot next week sometime. With this ferment I added 2lb's of malt extract spread - the type for putting on toast for brekie - its about 64% sugars.

Might try adding another 1lb of malt and some fresh wheat germ to the strip to try and push the flavour a little on the spirit run- Adding treacle to my rum strip has been a great success so hoping this will also work - have had no trouble with burning. Will report back.

Re. the Vat 69 comment, I probably should have clarified that when I tasted it, it was literally straight out of the pot still (I was stripping it to run it though my VM the next day), no aging or oaking or flavouring or anything. With a bit of time and some work put in it would probably be a pretty decent whiskey :mrgreen:
