Are you using cracked dried corn or whole dried corn? Cracked will soften a lot quicker.

Is there any way I can make it about 40% abv and is this recipe okay to go through a air still and I'm using dried corn but real cautious to use stock feed products I heard it's quite dangerous

There was a article on Google saying you shouldnt ingest stock feed it causes alot of problems wouldn't that be the same as using it in the fermenter

Given that we are just fermenting on the grain for flavour, and that we leave all the grain in the fermenter when we decant the wash into the boiler, it's not a problem. Where flashing off ethanol as a vapour from the wash so once collected as distillate it's a long way from stockfeed.

I used cracked corn from a local farmer who grew it and milled it on his property. He sells to other farmers and also uses it himself for stockfeed. Never had any dramas with it myself, don't forget that there is lots of misinformation out there not only on the internet but local home brew shops as well.

Eating stockfeed probably would be dangerous... I know the conditions in any stockfeed outlet I've been to haven't been great examples of hygienic environments.

But, we don't eat the grain and we run it through a still... and it ends up at an abv higher than anything nasty can survive at. I just can't imagine a bacteria making it through a column with ethanol vapour and survive.

Bwko is a fantastic recipe, happy drinking :obscene-drinkingdrunk:

Air still is just a pot still, strip & spirit run, take small cuts, maybe 100mls.

What do you mean can you make it 40%??? Age it at 65% then water down. Or water down and drink white.

Are you measuring abv with an hydrometer or alcometer?

If it's an alcometer, have you checked its calibration? Put it in water at 20 degrees C and it should read dead on 0. If not, it's out of cal.

There’s a good thread on running airstill here somewhere, I think it’s in potstill section but may be distillers warehouse. If you’re only getting 20% something is wrong, maybe dangerously so if you have a leak etc. Find and read, has good info on strip & spirit run.
Are you sure your wash has finished? Could be another cause of low output.

Hi all,

Im a newbee here about to make my first batch. The recipe says 1/2 cup of yeast for a 30 litre batch ....is this correct? Just seems to be a lot. Reading through this forum someone says 1 teaspoon (5grams) Could you please verify the correct amount.

Hi Jimmy welcome :greetings-waveyellow:

This recipe is very forgiving mate you could use either amount. The idea is the more you use the quicker it will kick off and ferment. It may also differ depending on which yeast you use.

By the way mate it would be great if you could pop into the welcome center and introduce yourself. It's a way of us getting to know you and find out what you want to get out of the hobby :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Half a cup is right... any of the tried and proven recipes are there for that exact reason. A lot of my ferments i use 80 grams of bakers yeast to 25-28 ltrs :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks for the quick reply. I have now started, just waiting for it to cool to add the yeast. I have now added a post in the welcome centre.

For a sugarhead yes but for all grain it still needs to be gelatanized before being mashed :handgestures-thumbupleft:
