Usually aim for between 4-5 kg of sugar to 25 litres of wash, so you seem pretty good there. Did you correct you hydrometer for temperature? They're usually calibrated at around 20 degrees C. The wheat floaties could also raise the hydro reading.

Yeah. Im wondering if there was just more dense sugar solution at the bottom of the fermenter. 1.110 isnt possaible with 36kg of sugar. And i didnt correct for temp, but it wasnt that much higher. Anyway. Its bubbling away super hard now. Ill take another SG in a day or so and see where its.at.

1050 today and fizzing like a hive of bees. Perfect.

So ive started running this through my reflux still 40 to 45 litres at a time. Throw 250ml fores. Take 12 250ml cuts and a litre of tails. Temp on the thermo stays solid at 77c for the whole run, which is 89 to 90 abv. The first two cuts are a bit harsh. Quite cheap vodka like. But not entirely unplesant. The remaining 12 are smooth. Almost to the point of oily. They coat the tongue. Slight butterscotch flavour. Certainly warming on a cold day.

Are these the sort of results others are getting?

Also, the dunder smells like spew. Is that expected?

Yes that is butyric acid which turns into an ester that smells like pineapple when you boil it with alcohol.

I know I’m late to the party but I ran wbab wash on Friday and it is easily the best thing that has come out of my still.

Hi all, looking for some advise here.
I only have a 2" pot and was interested in making some neutral for some experiments, gin & fruit mixes for schnapps for some variety.
I am expecting WBAB will give me better results than TPW in a pot?

Working in 25L ferments with a 50L keg boiler

I was thinking about stripping a bit slower than i would for a whisky and making a rough judgement call out the still to seperate feints and 'hearts' in seperate bulk containers.
Collect the stripped 'hearts' for a further spirit run, and re-running all the feints with the next wash until i had approx 30L of 'hearts' at 40%, then do a true slow spirit run on the pot.
Given i will likely do a third run through the still as either a gin mix or after mixing with fruit for clear spirit, i am hoping to have a fairly clean tasting spirit as an end product.

I am happy to be generally doing more runs and have no issues in making fine cuts on the spirit, i am more interested in quality over quantity, and im not expecting to complete my bubbler any time soon.

Normally you do a strip run fast and hard and collect down to 20% or lower if you wish. Once you have enough low wines slow spirit run, put feints aside for next spirit run or keep them till you have enough for an all feints run.. Any reason for wanting to do two spirit runs?

Edit you aiming for a pot stilled neutral? If so yes do the two spirit runs..

Wbab through a pot will be better than tpw. But it won't be neutral. It might be an OK vodka after a strip and two spirit runs. I drink it as a vodka from my bubbler after a strip and spirit run (4 plates). The strip run really improves it.

Just trying to get the expectations right in my head, the desired outcome of the second spirit run, is it about a clearer cut on the feints, or is it more to strip flavour further?

This is just a question in general, I did a strip run yesterday but had to work all day today & didn’t get another wash down. Will my backset be ok to use tomorrow in my wash?

Back in June i ran a WBAB wash and as an experiment I chucked in couple of weetbix in a sealed jar with some hearts and a French oak domino. I just found it this afternoon. It tastes amazing! It will need coffee filtering but holy shit, I love it. Next I’m gonna try some “oaking” with some Allbran as well. Nutrigrain whiskey oaked with some nutrigrain in a jar will have to be tried too.

I just found a 20L barrel of 4 or 5 gen wbab in the back of my shed. Just over a year old. Holy fuck it's amazing.
