Evening Guru's,

A question for thee.

I've knocked up a couple of single gen rums, put through the pot, using molasses, raw sugar and a SS rum distillers yeast. I love it. But id love to ditch the HBS yeast. Problem is im not keen on using a fertiliser(DAP) as nutrient.
Could anyone advise as to an alternate nutrient?
All advice appreciated

Sum people don't use any extra nutrients in molasses washes, I use DAP nothing wrong with it at all. You can also use a bit of tomato paste, or some boiled old yeast. Have a look at some of the other recipes and see what they use for nutrients.

Yeah, you can use bakers yeast without nutrients, you can get DAP from HBS which is food grade or as above, you can use some tomato paste.

I used to use DAP which is called Yeast Nutrient from the HBS .

Now I don't bother .Just use a teaspoon of Epsom salts per 25 liter and its powering away ( as per MacRum).Aerate the wash with a paint stirrer first then add 1/2 cup bread yeast per 25 liters.

Feedstock Molasses is full of nutrients

I think you will find the DAP more beneficial and "safer" than Epsom salts.

True agricultural fertilizer contains DAP but can have other shit in it.

The DAP from brew shops is purer and is fine to use :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Whats the issue with epsom salts Sam , I just use it because Mac uses it in MacRum and it works .Although I would love to know that it does .Why wouldn't it be safe ?

I don't know why it would be unsafe, but I think it is added because yeast need minerals as well as nurtients. I make sure to add Epsom Salts cause I am on tank water and it has SFA minerals in it. Good for watering down my hooch though. :-D

If you use pure DAP that is as clean as your going to get. Or you can use Crow's patented clover method :handgestures-thumbupleft:

WARNING....this MacRumbo is freaken dangerous...I kid you not...more like MacYumbo...a shot of this once aged is so moreish...I drew 150 mls off my keg to taste at our weekly taste test and I had one then my taste buds went into party mode and was sheez 3 shots later it just started tasting better than mother's milk. Well worth the time and effort doing this. Thanx Mac for sharing... :handgestures-thumbupleft:
