I have looked at brewers friend, but have not used it to try and calculate sugar washes. I generally will try a 25L wash then go to 50L once I am happy with the initial run. I use bakers and safspirit yeasts. Half a bucket(roughly) of molasses that I use is about 5kg sugar. 11.8% by the calcs I use, should give me 12L @ 40% but thats assuming 100% efficiency.

It has molasses listed as a sugar very simple no calculating needed, just adjust batch size and add the amount of molasses and or sugar.Personally have not pushed past a 8% wash yet but I will at some point :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Anyone add caramel to their Mcrum? Not sure its needed but might try it to see what it does, any ideas on amounts? :-B

I think youd have better success from oak or artificially adding it after

What do you mean artificially adding afterward?. Happy just using oak just wanted to try some caramel to see what it adds :handgestures-thumbupleft:

yes I made a light caramel on the stove with a few hundred grams white sugar taken to a dark straw colour then added to my rum. It was good but ..not as good as I expected flavour wise. Maybe it would improve if I let it sit for a few weeks ? dunno.
Likewise honey - not the flavour combination I was hoping for.
I found mixing regular soft brown sugar and stirring till dissolved gives the best sweetener to my rum -probably because it is just sugar plus molasses

Was not so much sweetner I wanted, it was a flavour profile caramel in particular. Gotta wait till I have more stock before I can give it a go..

I get this when I use my copper Pot Head on full power, rather than break down the bubbler. Last Rum strip I did I dropped the Power to 3/4 once it started to flow and it didn't happen, I dont consider myself a Guru by any stretch and would be interested to hear what the experts say :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I get it sometimes. I was thinking it might have been some sort of molasses residue thats carried over.
I never really gave it much thought

I just tried some of my rum, and at best it is a shocker. It does not have the body, it's got that manky taste. Am I just being impatient or what.

It's got 9-10 gr per litre of American oak at 65 % been siting on a shelf in a demijohn. I haven't let it breathe often, so does this make a difference?, it is also a very light colour once reduced to 40%. It's been sitting for a looong two months. I was very coservative on the cuts so I know it's all hearts.

How can I fix this, add more oak, open the lid up every second day, I'm at a loss

I find, but havent done rum, but when you do 10g/l 2 months isnt really long enough. This was with the 2" bubbler so pot may require longer again. if i do 3months or less i feel 15g is best. had 8g/l once whisky and after 2m it tasted like it had barely aged due to lack of oak and time. With 10g i would leave it for at least another month before checking. less oak for longer age time more for less so with 10g let it sit for another month or two :handgestures-thumbupleft:

How long has it been ageing?

I ran my first rum over the Christmas break and had similar concerns to you after two months. It's been on 10g/l now for close to six months and it's turned into a cracker. It's in a corked demijohn in the back of the cupboard and has only been aired without the cork twice in that time and that was just sitting on the bench overnight.

Give it a bit more time and I reckon it will come right. I didn't think mine would but it has.

Cheers,

Thx I'll stop being impatient and leave it for a few mor months. I thing the next rum I do I might up the oak for the first month or so than lower it down to 10 gram per litre, see if l can make it drinkable quicker
