Hi all,

This is probably a stupid question, but I can't find any previous discussion about it. With supermarket stock in the pasta/tomato sauce section being what it is at the moment, the only tomato paste left on the shelf was a couple of tubs of Legos triple strength paste. Do you reckon I should just chuck that in as is, or could/should I dilute it down 1/3 paste to 2/3 water to bring it back to normal strength?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I put down a 25l TPW wash on Saturday night using the above recipe/method. Pitched the yeast at 30deg then sealed the lid straight away. Pretty soon it was bubbling away nicely.

The next night I did my second wash using the same method only using a different brand of bakers yeast, and a little lemon juice. Instead of sealing the lid straight away this time I left it loose for 24hrs. (only caus I remembered that was what I used to do with the Turbo stuff I used to use) after 24hrs I sealed the lid but the airlock isn't bubbling at all.

Any ideas on why this may be?

baldric1 here, just mixed my first attempt at this tpw wash, the only difference is I used 240 grams of live yeast. my reasoning is that the baker says he uses 3% live compared to 1% when using dry. someone else said something similar but I'm not able to find that reply. It's going off already. Lets see how it goes.

Just kicked off my first ever wash. (TPW or otherwise)
Hit all the numbers except my temp was just over 30 deg.
Problem is, my inner brewer took over and while making the wash, I rehydrated the yeast. By the time I had everything dissolved, it turned into a race to see if I could get the yeast into the fermenter before it overflowed it’s Pyrex jug and took over the kitchen.
I just managed to wrangle it into the fermenter in time, but here’s the question... is 4L of headspace enough? It’s 21L of 1.090 in a 25L fermenter.

Lol, I’ve done the same race, and then the race to clean up the kitchen before swmbo comes in :laughing-rolling:
Should be more than enough head space btw.

Hi Pimpsqueak
I avoid the rush by using a 4 litre food safe bucket. The 2l pyrex jug couldn't cut it and it flowed everywhere. If you sir the hydrated yeast it takes up less space in the bucket and it you stir it into the fermenter when you tip it in it is more manageable .

Hah! Glad I’m not the first person to do this dance.
I’ll definitely be using a much larger vessel next time :-D

That is quite the pile of yeast in that pic. Crazy stuff! I’ve never pitched more than 2 11g packs of yeast into a single batch of beer before. It’s all so familiar, yet different...

Finished a batch of TPW also using elements of the T500 guide Produced a very nice neutral spirit, doubt I'll ever do a Turbo batch again. Next batch went down straight away. Thanks! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

?? Just distilled my first TPW, 25 liters I took 2.2 liters after 200 ml take off at the start.
Does this sound about right? baldric1

It would be close. You can work it out fairly easy yourself if you have a sg and fg reading. Punch them into one of the calculators in the newbie corner and it will give you the Abv % of the wash before distillation. From that you can work out how many litres you should get from a wash.
In this case if your wash 10% Abv , there would be 2.5ltrs of alcohol in the wash. Given that you wont get all of it out and depending how low you go into tails 2.2ltrs may be close.

Bit of an odd one.

Myself and a mate both suffer from reflux (heartburn). Gets worse when I drink TPW based liquor. Thinking it could possibly be due to the acidity in the tomato base in this wash. Thoughts?

Thinking if I try a corn based wash (I have some cracked corn), do the brains here think that might work?

Do you drink it straight or with a mixer?

Do it scientifically and document your findings, the tried and proven method. ie Make the corn based batch drink it and see.

Good luck and enjoy it.
