When the wash is done I am expecting a light pink colour and no sweetness, should it be clear or opaque ?

I can see there is almost an inch of sludge on the bottom and the bubbling has stopped about 2 days ago.

It's 3 x 25L washes which I started about 10days ago. Won't be able to run them for another 6 days.

No responses but I ran the 1st 25L wash today and was happy with the results. Started with 200ml cuts then dropped to 100ml as i got near the end. I think i hit the start of tails and shut it down. Started to get a slight scent to it but nothing reminiscent of wet dog or cardboard as i have read here. Actually found it a little pleasant but will only use a little bit i think. I ended up with about 2.3L of 93.6% abv.

Not kidding about the fores and heads smelling sweet. Sickly sweet.

I have never got the wet cardboard or wet dog from tails.

Only way I describe tails is tails, once you have smelt and tasted it once you will never forget :puke-huge:

Jars have now aired for 24hrs and the smell has gone and tastes clean. I guess I have gained another 100mls of drinkable spirit. Stoked.

Do you de-gas the tpw once the SG is 990 or better? Then just leave it to settle and clear again? Cheers guys. I’ve got time and trying to be patient.

Hi all, this has probably been asked but I didn't want to comb through 65 pages of discussion to find there may not be an answer.
Has anyone done a comparison using different sugars with this wash ?
White / Raw / Brown / Caster / Dark Brown
Only asking cos the recipe says "sugar" but doesn't specify what type & does it affect the final product or time it takes for the wash to clear.

My guess use most processed ,white.,..all other grades have residual flavour...from not being as purified..

I rack off for another week and find a 1/2ml dunder on the bottom...

I am sure this has been asked before but I cannot find it.
Living in Brisbane and trying this for the first time, how do you guys keep your fermenting at the right temp during winter? Summer in Brisbane isn’t an issue but I ferment in the garage, so how do I keep it at the higher temps?

Hey mate, how about posting your own welcome thread in the newbies corner?

You've got a few options for heating. Heat pads, heat belts and aquarium heaters all work well. Place it on a foam mat and wrap in an old blanket too. Some aquarium heaters float which is bad news, a hose clamp or two fitted loosely to them helps them sink well enough until the density of the wash decreases.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Thought my TPW may have stalled, set it up on Saturday, hour later bubbling nicely then Sunday nothing.. reading up and all I can find is Its fool proof you can't screw it up.. give it a big stir and said what will be will be. Checked in on it a few times not much action so last night I peaked at the wash and thought yep its doing something so I'll wait a few more days and check again but somethings a brewing in the tub. first one so I'm pretty keen on getting it Stilled. :happy-partydance:

Fool proof is probably going a bit far...
I have seen plenty of recipes say ferments in 3-4 days. This is with ideal conditions, there are soo many variables, i think ive had it happen twice out of many batches. Get a hydrometer, when its stops dropping for a few days, its done, a wash can degass/bubble for weeks.

On a side note, i know your keen and in a hurry, but it really wont hurt to let it clear for a while, less yeast in the boiler means less esters produced
