Is it very bad if you add the yeast in above 30C, like 40C? Does it kill it off?

Hah. When the excitement strikes ... I’d say, yes, the majority would be cactus. Good news is, that they can now be utilized as fertilizer for the new yeast you will add, once the temp is around 30 degrees..

Thanks EziTasting it is bubbling away really nicely ATM with a nice cover on it. So should I still be putting more in? if so how much?

I wouldn’t worry if its bubling.

What’s happening is that the original qty of yeast wouldn’t be the same due to the heat killing some unknown qty... so it takes long for it to get going. That ‘could’ allow other yeast/bacteria to enter... in competition with the desired yeast.

Not a massive problem, especially when it’s bubbling.

With experience, you’ll get this less and less as your procedures and habits improve.

i will be getting some Dap tomorrow and chucking a 50L wash on i have everything but my multivitamins are out of date last year in april 2017 they are swisse mens ultivite can i use them ? will they still work?

This is my first time doing this wash so not sure how forgiving out of date multi vitamins will be

if someone has suggestions on some CHEAPER vitamins i can get from coles or woolies or even aldi if they sell multi vitamins plz let me know

Personally I think you will get away with the out of date vitamins. Aldi *used* to have the cheapest MVs (Essentialhealth) one-a-day men's) but at least in my stores they have discontinued them, I currently use Cenovis, but they vary in price from place to place. I bought my last lot "on special" at Priceline, only to find them cheaper at Coles.

I have to say that I think it is way more important to keep the wash at a reasonably constant 30C - that has, at least, been my experience, and since "clinking" to that I have done, at least, half a dozen washes with perfect results.

Most foods nowadays have “best before” date because dried food stuffs doesn’t actually change, or ‘dy off’. Keep in mind, they are dryso it’s not like they’re in a high state of energy to be reacting (Read oxydising)... having said that, there will be some reactions going on so they slowly loose their effectiveness- just use more...


:text-+1: on the temp control! The more I read, even on beer forums, their main focus is controlling the temp (once they have their recipe right)...

I’m looking for the purest tasting alcohol for gin. I’ve tried TPW. Keen to not have too much wheaty flavour. Would it be okay to halve the amount of bran to reduce the flavour?

Yes i read the problems you've had and am thinking if my ferment time doesnt stay heated i might buy a 10$ aquarium heater type thing on ebay might give a blanket or sleeping bag a go im going to try to start the ferment off around 37 degrees before adding the yeast and see if it just holds temp it'll be sitting next to 75L of TPW i put on 1day and a half ago

Hi so today i went to get the last ingredient for the mix all i needed was some DAP but my local HBS didnt have any (had some on order but his supply was having trouble sourcing it) can some one give me some recommendations on where i could get some ?
or is there an alternative to using DAP ?

Your HBS should sell "Wine Nutrient" which is DAP + vitamins and minerals

I actually used that before I forked out for the DAP (which is cheap but shipping sure as hell ain't) but blamed it for a slow ferment before I realised that that was being caused by temperature.

Technically "Wine Nutrient" could replace both the DAP and the MVs - Ted or another "master" may like to confirm that?

Alas my "Wine Nutrient" is now out of date but I am inclined to try it in a 23L wash to test it out.

after 8 x 138L washes I have used around 175g of DAP.

You should get around 1600L of wash from 250g of DAP by my calculations.

BTW your DAP link indicates you can collect it at your local Woolworths (although for me it indicates a BigW which is not ideal for me but better than paying postage).

PS: My 500g bag of DAP was $9.90 + $10.55 postage :-( Of around about a dozen suppliers that was the cheapest price+postage I could find.

I've just used the wine nutrient in 2 different wbab's one at the 4 teaspoon per 23l, one at 1 teaspoon. The 4 tsp took a week and still waiting for 1tsp to finish at 2 weeks.

i ended up buying the DAP from Ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162385488377 for 15 or so dollars 7$ plus 8$ postage (postage cost more then the dap LOL) but all up i think 1600L for 15$ is well worth it (according to bundaboys calculations) its not often i buy shit off ebay and i have bought a infared thermometer and a PH tester in the last 24 hours *** EXCITING**** which i have come across by reading the TPW 60 page thread and this FFV 13 page thread (SO CHEAP) Gotta love finding old relevant information that helps you out even if its not what your actually interested at the time

once again thanks Bundaboy for the reply good to see you still browsing the thread offering support to problems after all your initial hassle getting your FFV up and running reading you and peregian's reply's/converstaion has taught me quite a bit (being a brand newbie ))

If you haven't already been made aware, be very careful with the ph tester, the sensor is VERY fragile - you can probably guess how I know.

I use one of those aquarium heaters (and the other remains a spare) and a 30 year old space blanket, but I can assure you it is very much cooler down here in the Southern Highlands of NSW than *anywhere* in Queensland so you may be fine, still it can get cool in June/July, but you may well get by with just a space blanket/car sun screen/sleeping bag/blanket for the FFV.

thanks for the heads up with the PH TESTER i have been hesitant to buy the aquarium heaters until i monitor my wash temperatures (my tpws over the last 4-5 days still havent dropped below 29 degrees so i think i will hold off till winter and see what my lowest temp gets to before i waste 20$ on 2 aquarium heater (THEY ARE A GREAT PRICE, but so far i dont need them)

i bought a IR THERMOMETER bundaboy when it shows up i can give you my own opinion on it but so far the reviews i've seen on it (youtube) LOOK GREAT!! especially for 10$

Cheers mate, there are plenty of those style of thermometers available, but it is always good to get one known to work.
