That’ll do nicely.

Epsom salts are also used often as a yeast nutrient so it won’t do any harm. If ever you’re stuck without DAP, you can also boil up a small amount of yeast and use that as a nutrient as yeast will canabalise their dead!

Great thank Ezi. The recipe does say a pinch of Epsom so I thought it would be ok, just thought I would clarify if the more knowledgeable than me :-D

Haha all good, asked very similar questions in the beginning...

Joycy, I have been using that one too, it's the other stuff in it that has me concerned
I noticed my heads cuts were getting bigger, dunno if it was the nutrient, some other unknown factor, or my nose getting better - I generally have more hassles with tails (taste) than heads (smell) though...

So I stopped using it for the moment to see how things go - may be completely unrelated, but worth keeping an eye on

Interesting statement! What do you do now, Mr. Andrew?

Just chuck everything in the fermented and let em rip
Never had a stuck ferment and I’m not using urine based fertiliser :teasing-neener:

Thanks Andrew... I've tried that one I got in the brew store and currently have a wash fermenting, I just wanted to follow the recipe and steps to the letter since I've no idea what I'm doing ha. Fault finding won't be a strong point until I have some experience so just wanted to give it every chance to go without a hitch

I had no DAP on my first (recent) attempt, so I just boiled some bakers yeast and used that... went off like a firecracker!
I love this recipe for neutral, so far anyway. Hope to do the spirit run in the next couple of weeks.

I've got all the goods on the shelf ready to go for this FFV , but doing back to back 125 lt rum washes has snowed me under , but I'm going to throw one down tonight or tomorrow, I'll go without the dap on this one.

Don't expect the same speed if you leave the dap out

Thanks for the heads up there, and i understand. It'll be a while before I get to still so it may suit me this time around, might even split the mix and do a side by side comparison.
To be honest i probably won't pull the gear down and clean it to be a fair comparison.
I probably wouldn't even be able to taste the difference lol

So I did two wash's on the 23rd of December and they are still fermenting / bubbling ever so slightly. Current SG is .991. Day time temps in my shed are fairly warm i.e about 35 or so degrees maybe a tad hotter. why so slow?

sg .991 = run it

did it get much hotter than that on any particular day? might have had a die off from heat?

what size wash & how much sugar?

:text-+1:
The slight bubbling will be escaping co2, .991 is well finished

Had cooler evenings down to about 16 here in Brisbane. Used the standard quantities
Ingredients (for a 23 litre wash)
4kg Sugar
250g wheat bran
1 Multivitamin tablet
Pinch Epson salts
½ tsp DAP
Citric acid
50g bakers yeast

Put 27 litres of this on on with the thought it would better suit my pot over kale or TPW.
Starting on the 5th and following the recipe as close as possible with an SG of 1070. Wrapped the little fermenter in a wool blanket because the nights are getting cold here.

This morning it was bang on 990 and done.

The F of the TFFV was no lie.

Will be running this and my gen 2 cornflakes this weekend.

I threw down 46L in my 60L fermenter but I've never had the SG over 1050, most times it's 1040.

I'm following the recipe to the letter but yeh seems that I always have a lower sg then some of the guys here.

Any ideas?

Have you checked your hydrometer in tap water? If it doesn't read 1.000 in tap water then it's out of calibration and you should adjust all readings accordingly. Are you measuring it at 20 degrees C? If it's not at 20 degrees C then it won't be accurate. The tap water mentioned above also needs to be at 20 degrees C.

I actually haven't checked the hydrometer in tap water, it's brand new but I should check it.

I compensate for temperature using a conversion calculator, usually I pitch yeast at 35C and measure SG just before pitching.

Calculator usually adds 4 to what I've measured so 1.040 would be 1.044 at that temp.
