Just run the first spirit run of my tp/kw (tomato paste & kale wash) and I get a bitter (not sour or tart) after taste.

Has anyone come accross that anytime???

Did you grow or buy the kale on garden site that is sweeter in cold weather.

Stripped 200L then did first half of the spirit run (ended up with near 60L of low wines @ 51%)...

I don't know what you were drinking Googe when you came up with the idea of using kale in a sugar wash.....but it beats the hell out of anything else. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've known about this kale wash of Googe's for a while now off another forum...I even use kale now in my Golden syrup washes to make GS rum...

My 2 cents mate...could it be the TP?? my wife & I both love cooking and we know that using TP in a dish will give a bitter taste....we add honey to balance it out.

Why use TP with the kale??? as I understand it, they both do the same thing....feed the yeast....maybe the two together mixed and that's what has given the wash this taste??

G'day Ice,
Didn't have enough tomato paste and I wanted to try the kale...

ALL previous TPW were nothing like this one! They all tasted great with slight floral notes so this had me completely stumped!!

So, for a start, no more mixing my ingredients!!

Starting to think it may have something to do with us stripping those beer kegs ... I know we did clean it, perhaps we need to boil some water and run that thru before doing any other washes!?!?

Well, we managed to only get thru half the low wines, second batch will be going thru this weekend - guess we'll see if it was the wash or the cleaning of the still...

The spirit run through a reflux should clean it up well...I suggest you go the whole hog and make a straight sugar and kale wash....you won't be disappointed my friend. :-D

Well it's time for this noob to try out the kale goodness.

Quick question. After reading through this it seems like a powerhouse wash and i was wondering how much head space to provide.
It's out in the shed so doesn't matter if it overflows really but i would like to avoid it if i can.

General consensus?

I use 30ltr buckets...I aim for around 23/25ltr max...that level is 6" below the top...I've had the crown hit the underside of the lid.

Hey toodles, I just blitz it with the stick blender till it's broken up, no real rocket science to it, I like things easy and simple lol.
