Stainless Steel Fermenters

Postby Ned » Sun Jan 06, 2019 7:25 pm

Beer brewing at 18 deg and TPW at 28 deg in a 290 litres upright Westinghouse freezer.
With the emphasis on distilling )TPW and All grain whiskey ) and now that I have a fantastic bubbler form Andrew at 5SD, I am trying to up the anty on volume a bit.
(not a 200 litre plastic drum)
I have made a fermenter out of a 50 litre keg and was thinking :-
2 x 50 litre kegs that I could possible get "tig" together, but its a specialist field with purging etc. (Damn heavy even without wort) Even though I have a roller setup in the
bottom or the fridge to get the Keg in and out.
What's your thoughts on this baby for a fermenter. 88 Litres (Have to put a tap in it, but thats easy).
Has any body used one as a fermenter. It will fit the the fridge nicely.

That seems to be great value to me. Must be fairly thin gauge so I’m not sure you would be wanting to move it around once it’s full. Would be great for ease of cleaning though :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I have the 35L and it is as described but thin gauge. I use it to store low wines. I reckon you could definately use it as a fermenter. I would place it on a small deck with wheels for ease of movement once full.

Would be using a trolley. Not sure if putting in a tap would work also.

I think it would be too thin. Have a boiler anyway.

Would use a trolley and slide it into the fridge. Handles might not be strong enough. Not sure about putting in a tap could be too thin also.

Thats what I am doing at the moment. The thought was one 88 litre ferment in the fridge.
2 Stripping runs
1 Spirit run.
Begining to think it through and I think I will be better in doing a 44 litre ferment and cube it and than do a 48 litre ferment.
Just need to plan a bit more.

Thanks everyone for their input. :text-thankyoublue:
Big is not necessarily better, except when it come to one of the Bubblers from Andrew at 5 Star Distilling :text-lol:

Mate, that's really cheap. I recently bought a SS Brewbucket (25L) and that cost me nearly 300 Large. It's a high quality piece of kit too. I'd be wondering why it's so cheap...If you buy one, let us know if it's any good or not :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I have the 25L SS Brewbucket to and its is great.
At the moment I am going to give it a miss as I think it will be very thin walled and concerned about 88 kgs of wort in it.

Cheers

Might have to grab one or two for low wine storage. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just checked with the seller on Flea-bay .8mm thick or thin :teasing-blah: About the same a a stockpot.
SS Brewbuckets and Kegs are approximately 1.5 mm

The easy way with the cheap SS coming out of China is stick a magnet on it. SS is non magnetic but the shit coming in is. Think 316 for distilling and nothing else as if a magnet sticks the SS is shit. Also 304 being a lesser grade and as it's all made in China now avoid it like the plague.

In my job before xmas I was involved removing old 304 and I checked the pipe with my magnet. The gun SS tig welder guy asked me until the the magnet stuck on a SS pipe, just a loose fit but still as SS is non magnetic I had to ask when the that pipe was inslled an he said 3 years ago so the rot is in and abound. Like I say 316 and just hope the magnet dosn't stick.
