Using Mapp gas to solder 2 inch copper

Postby bundyftw » Sat Jan 14, 2012 8:38 pm

g'day all
I need to silver solder some brass bushes to 2 inch copper pipe, i don't have access to oxy left and looking at mapp gas options and i wanted to get some advice on which torch will do the job efficiently.
I heard the berzomatic ts8000 isn't up to the job of soldering 2 inch, I have been recomended the Rothenberger Superfire 3 but at 260 a pop it's a big step up in price. Can those of you who use mapp gas advise whether the ts8000 is up to the job soldering brass bushes to 2 inch or do i need to drop the extra dough on the rothenberger superfire 3?

thanks

right on..ts8000 it is. 4 inch is impressive. i admit i haven't used this torch, just the 4000 but i was having trouble getting heat to solder with that. hate giving over money hand over fist to bunnings, but better that than dan murphys!
cheers

uhmmm are you talking about soldering or brazing ?

If your talking about using brazing rods & not soft solder then it will work on 2" ,but you can forget it on anything bigger.

Soft solder is a dream to use once your used to it, and it's plenty strong enough for most things we build.

Soft soldering brass to copper is easy, but carefull with the heat on brass if your brazing or it could run away on you :laughing-rolling:

Bunnings has "bernzomatic" lead free silver solder in a roll..... use it :handgestures-thumbupleft:
