Size of product condensers?

What size are people generally using for product condensers on pot stills/strippers and VM etc?

Is 1/2" through 1.5" around the mark? Also how long? 600mm?

Also at what point is overkill?

For my pot still I was thinking of using 1" in 2", is this too much or is there such a thing as too much?

By the way im just talking about liebig condensers.

Hi Sam_and_Liv,
some of it depends on how much heat your throwing at it,
the size/ output of your still,
water flow etc, you could probably use a 1/2" inside a 1", at 600 long.
if it's not enough, you could always make a second one or go larger!

I started of with 3/4 over 1/2 inch on my first and second pot still....used both of them for stripping mainly. I found that at times depending on amount of alc left in the wash, heat input, and a few other factors that they huffed a bit. After doing a bit of reading I ended up building a 1 inch over 3/4 lieghberg for the pot that I use most......might not be everyones cup of tea but I think it works a heap better. Not only does it huff a lot less under extreme conditions .....but I think it also puts a bit more product out with the same amount of heat as a smaller one.

Not sure ....I cant see why it wouldnt work.......I would think it would be a good idea to crimp the 1 inch to creat a bit of turbulance in the vapor path.....or shove some copper scrubbers up it......nothing ventured nothing gained. In reality i dont think you would need more than 1 inch over 3/4 unless you had a really big boiler and some very serious heat under it on a stripping run.

I think you only need to go up one pipe size, so if using 1" use 32mm for the sheath.

It's not a matter of your water getting hot at the end, it's a matter of contact with cool surface, so a stepped down liebig is going to be more efficient or a longer one.

If you really want to throw heat at it look on Artisan for some more complex builds, search punkindensor or triple walled liebig, even a graham condensor.

Some of those designs are pretty fuckin cool! I thought I was talking about overkill :laughing-rolling: What are some of those guys running? 500L boilers heated directly from motlen magma?

I think for my modest 50L Keg boiler and burner the standard liebig with a couple of winds in it should do the trick nicely.

They are all on standard kegs (cept for mcstills) i think, although if there's one from myles in there it'll be on a smaller setup.

It's about the amount of heat you want to throw at it. These designs are just more efficient in knock down power than a standard liebig and more suitable to flat out stripping.
