New pot build

Postby Squid boy » Wed Dec 12, 2018 10:42 am

Would anyone suggest any changes to my new pot still before I start to solder? Any advice or suggestions appreciated.
Cheers

Think about a triclamp fitting to the PC, so you can use it if you go a bubbler in future.
Personnally, I'd make the water connection quite short, as stress on the joints can crack them, or put a fitting into the PC and have no short copper tube.

A triclamp to the condenser will let you use it on a neutral still at a later stage

A baffle or three in the condenser will make it more efficient - let you strip faster

The condenser full of water will be heavier - you may want to lengthen the riser above the 45 for balance, also a shorter riser from the lid will make it harder to tip, lower centre of gravity - maybe swap those 2 pieces?

As you have it, the only piece on the still usable for something else is the spool from the lid to the 45, if you dont want to wait for another clamp, consider swapping the clamp below the 45 to the condenser, that bottom join will be easier to retrofit with a clamp than one on the condenser

A shorter piece in the middle of the U will move the centre of gravity over too, thats alot of weight to be hanging off that lid - be careful and get it right :handgestures-thumbupleft:

shorten the riser will make it more stable, i highly doubt losing that height effect output. triclamp to pc and brace the water out on pc back to pc
edit you could even do away with the riser just clamp that top triclamp straight to boiler ferrul

If ya building a shotgun condencer ,make it able ta deal with output of a larger more powerful boiler in the future and think about how ya coolant lines will suit that application as well, and definitely fit ferrules each end.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Condenser now with three baffles, would the inlet & outlet be the sameside as the two and baffle plates.

The way you've got your baffles set up, I'd install inlet and outlet on the same side. The side opposite that seal in the background of the photo.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
