Hi there, Yet another newbie.

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Hi there, Yet another newbie.

Postby Cap » Tue May 09, 2017 6:35 am

Morning all.
Been dropping in here for some time looking at 'How its done'.
Thought it time I got brave and stuck my name in the registry.

I am trying to put together my own Whiskey.
Using a T500 after struggling with trying to get copper pipe into a nice coil.

Cheers,
Colin.

Welcome!

If you're focused on whiskey, you should be aiming for a pot still, as reflux stills strip out the flavour by design. There's a few designs around, but the simplest ones just use a liebig condenser, so no coils.

There are adaptors available to convert the t500 boiler into a ferrule top for attaching a 2" riser (at 5 star distilling store). There's some gear for sale here occasionally that might get you started - probably worth putting a very rough location in your profile. (ie. Brisbane, Melbourne, etc)

For whiskey a pot still will be your best weapon, FSD 2" would be the go! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Definitely go a pot still for whiskey mate, you can make your own if you want plenty of build threads on here. Or buy one it you are time shot or not keen to make one, they are pretty easy though and in a few hours you will be done.

G'day Colin, glad that you've joined, welcome.
A pot still will certainly give you a good whiskey but it is limited to only ever producing brown spirits.
A bubbler is what you should aim for, believe me.
I started with a t500, then had a pot and now a bubbler. The bubbler wins hands down.

Welcome Colin.

There are other options open to you if you're not the DIY kind. You can put together a 2" pot that will fit on your T500 boiler using 2" SS parts from 5 star. I wouldn't recommend the 5 star 2" pot as sold as, athough it is an excellent product, I think the weight distribution will cause the boiler to topple over. There is another post floating around here where I suggested all the required parts for a pelican style pot that gets around that issue.

EDIT: Here is the post I was talking about: http://www.aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=10728#p185363

Thank you for the welcome.
Having fun doing neutrals atm but will expand as knowledge allows.

And with all the flavours that are out there it seems all too easy.
