Hi thanks for your site - saved me making any turbo wash's
I made a tpw with a bit of cornflakes thrown in, but for whatever reason it didn't distill correctly and the flavour tastes like heads throughout the hearts.
I have a HBS pure distillery reflux + 30L boiler
I tried airing, microwaving, adding sodium carbonate all to no avail, re-distilled it (don't know what percent alc/vol wash - prob 40-50%) but no change - ended up as 'window cleaner" in a plastic container with food dye colouring.

My next batch was sooo much cleaner - similar wash added polenta too, came out smooth and clean with a slight whisky flavour :obscene-drinkingdrunk:

I am looking to upgrade already :D a ccvm 3" modular with pot head onto a keg...just gotta get parts.........

:text-thankyoublue:

Welcome mate :greetings-waveyellow:

Was the still new? If so or even if it wasn't new, do you do a vinegar cleaning run followed by a sacrificial spirit run? If not that may have been where some of the crappy tastes came from. There may have been some residual crap left from when it was made or from whatever the last bloke put theough it. And as bluc mentioned, if you didn't do cuts that wouldn't have helped.

I'm glad you got it running alright now and I hope she makes you some good booze. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

i did cuts in 330ml bottles, but the whole lot was simular
I think that when I purred off the wash into the boiler I had too much solids that went through creating the bad taste?
And when I re-distilled it should have been 20-30% not 40-50% :violence-smack:

I did a vinegar run, maybe not enough?
working good now but, got a new wash on the go

thanks

Wooduck might be onto something. Should always clean a still when you first get it.
Sediment should not change taste unless of course it burns..

Do some more reading on what to look for when doing cuts. The heads cut can be quite subtle to a newbie. Overly sweet chemical taste is what to avoid when doing the heads cut. My first ever wash was rum and i thought the heads smelt fantastic. I still ditched it and over time my perception of the heads changed. It now quite often makes me gage.
Tails is a bit easier to detect. Being more distinct and undesirable .taste..

Hi and welcome to the forum lots of good info here and good advice if you get stuck.
As an alternative to TPW try a FFV wash, a little more work but it gives you a very nice neutral vodka :handgestures-thumbupleft:
