Hi All
I am another newbie to this hobby.
I have been researching and reading for a few months before I really got into it.
I bought a Turbo 500 boiler and the Still Spirits pot and reflux stills. ( the package price was very attractive).
So far I have done an all grain rye whiskey with barley and corn , Have stripped it and have 13 lt of low vines for the spirit run.( it was a double batch).
I got involved with my brother and I am looking forward to a rewarding and hopefully a very tasty hobby.
I have a heavily peated all barley whiskey fermenting at the moment and also have a sugarhead wash going with about 3lt of backwash from the first batch.( to make a very neutral spirit ie.vodka)
We are hopping to do an all corn mash very soon in a 60lt fermenter on the grain.
Looking forward to learning more and more.
I have almost finished my boiler controller setup ( I am an electrical contractor specialising in industrial control systems) using a couple of temp controllers and a ssr and a phase controller as well as 5 contactors.
I am setting it up for expandability and had most of the gear in stock or sitting around.
Great to be here.

Cheers..

Sounds like you know what your doing and more than most newbies, not many start off on all grain I don't think.
Well done :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Welcome aboard! :greetings-waveyellow:

All the research has got you off to a good start. Were you into homebrew before hand - all grain is definitely an ambitious start otherwise :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Your control background sounds handy for this hobby! I'm in the middle of researching how to improve my power situation, maybe put in a 32a 3 phase socket(house already has 3 phase) and use a SSR to split to 3x1 phase for elements with control.

Hi there

If you put a 20 amp 3 phase outlet in you can use a simple switch box to take of 3 x single phase at 20 amps each.
The other alternative would be to make a 3 phase still ;-) ;-) .
The only issue would be what mains you have coming in.
Most places I have seen would only have about 30 amps 3 phase coming in unless you had it specially done when you built.
I had a place that my ex ended up with and I had 63 amps 3 phase to the shed and 35 amps 3 phase to the house.

I have done quite a bit of home brew previously but even then I did not use grains I just bought the kits and added to them.
When I researched it all the sugar washes seem good for vodka and neutral spirits but I much prefer whiskeys and my father loves a good single malt whiskey.
Looking at what was involved there was a bit more involved in ag but the product reviews seems to be so much better.
I am doing a sugar wash with about 3 lt of backset from the first strip to make some neutral spirit. I have the still spirits super reflux as well as the pot.
I know they are not the greatest but it was a good starting point and the price was very attractive.

Cheers
Dave

I don't know the size of the incoming cable, but there's 3 40A RCDs, so I suspect you're right on the total available. I guess I'll be aiming for 2 or 3 x 20A or the 3 phase and switch box concept. I've not seen any hobby scale 3 phase elements, so that's probably out - Thanks for the help!
