BBQ for whiskey lessons?

Postby chrus86 » Wed Nov 01, 2017 9:53 am

Hey everyone! I am a professional barbecuer wanting to learn how to distil whiskey. Am curious if anyone in Brisbane is open to teaching me or talking to me more about everything? In return I can teach american BBQ or supply briskets, porks etc. Current Australian Champions - Barbecue Mafia!!

I'd be keen but me trying to teach you how to make whiskey would be like you teaching me to burn beef :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Yep Doc or bluc would be the go :handgestures-thumbupleft:. I'm hoping to get up that way one day and try catch up with a few blokes and definitely drop in on doc's establishment :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Haha I have no idea even where to begin so maybe it isn't out of the question? Plus the BBQ is normally going daily anyway!

got any gear mate? get yourself a pot still plenty of plans on here to follow for a quality cheap build. if your entering the next price/keeness level, check out the plated columns( bubblers) they give superior product in a single distill

No gear yet. I didn't want to buy or build something I would find out was garbage. Is the quality of whisky better from a more expensive plated column? Or does a cheaper still just involve more work for a similar product? I was hoping to build or buy something relatively cheap to learn the ropes on, BUT if I learn I am better off buying a more expensive still from the start then I will have to save some pennies and stop buying smokers :naughty:

Think of the pot still as a Weber and the bubbler/plated column as a comp spec offset smoker... You can make a fine whiskey with both, but the bubbler will make it quicker, easier and... Well, better.

Welcome!

A pot still if fine mate they just need two runs thats all. They can't do neutral though so if you wanted that you'd need a reflux aswell. Pots are cheap and easy to build.

Bubblers are favored because they are faster and only require a single run, they also produce good flavor carry over with higher abv output. They can also be easily changed/modded to do neutrals, brown spirits and even gins. They are however more difficult to make and are more expencive.

OK awesome. Thank you!
So would starting out with a pot still for 12 months be a good idea/ok? Then move onto a plated still once I begin learning more?

Perfect way to start mate. I did a couple of years of pot stilling before I built my bubbler, and a pot still is the best way to learn the basics.

If you build or buy it correctly, you'll be well on your way to a bubbler, too.

Check out the 5 star 4" modular pot. Great pot still and all parts are reusable on a bubbler

Acquire a 50l keg, make a 2” pot for it. Run it on gas with a 3 or 4ring burner and that will be useful when u start on all grain :handgestures-thumbupleft: or if u wanna go lectric use a 2400w weldless element :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Either way u go will be step in right direction :-B
