First time distiller-sugar wash question

Hey guys,

I have a hand me down super reflux still from still spirits and have bought some
Dextrose and a turbo pack.

All the reading I’ve done I’m now in two minds as to use the turbo or not but I don’t want to waste it.

Could I just add less sugar?

Or should I just ditch the turbo and put down a TPW using th dextrose?

Welcome to AD GBarb.

Use the turbo and dextrose as a learning experience for your first run then switch to one of the tried and proven recipes. Do your cuts and save the product. Once you've done another run with one of the proven recipes, compare the results. Save the turbo product for cleaning your next still when you decide to upgrade.

No need to go to the expense of dextrose for TPW or any of the other proven recipes, normal supermarket sugar is fine.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Hi GBarb, I moved this post to the welcome centre as it was your first and can be used to discuss any topic you wish :handgestures-thumbupleft:
:text-+1: on what the professor said, but my thoughts on using up a turbo because you don’t want to be wasteful means your really just going to waste electricity/ water/ time to produce something sub standard. But every run you make is a learning experience too.
Good luck and have fun with the new hobby

Welcome here mate :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Have heard of people splitting the turdbo packets in half and using less sugar to make it slightly better, but you can only roll a turd in so much glitter :teasing-tease:

What sort of turbo yeast some have good yeast that work at colder temperatures but not hot weather just do not follow instructions on the pack way too much sugar.

And save it for future cleaning, they all need cleaning when you want to run different types of washes

Processed white sugar is actually glucose + fructose, I use some dextrose in small qty's (1/2 - 1 kg) in sugar washes (bought a large bag from turbo days, slowly using it up) as the yeast has to work a bit harder to spilt the white sugar up, so it gets to start and multiply in the dextrose which is just glucose and easier to digest for the yeast initially

Also have been using up to 1/2 Dex vs sugar when making recipes and essence bottles - it modifies the flavour a little

Forget about saving for cleaning dextrose is too expensive to waste pull the still apart and soak in some suitable cleaner and use a scourer . .
