Very Very Newbie

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Very Very Newbie

Postby Absinthe-Kat » Mon Jan 28, 2019 1:41 pm

Hi All!

So I've been wanting to make absinthe for years, and I've decided this year is my year. I have never made any sort of alcohol before, and I know I'm going to get some flack but I have got on order the T500 still, I should be getting it in about a week ... I wish I'd stumbled on this forum a couple of weeks ago, I might have made a more informed decision. But such is life.

If anyone has made or has any helpful hints on making absinthe, I would be thankful for all advice!

Cheers :text-thankyoublue:

Bienvenue Absinthe-Kat.

You'll need a pot still as well as the reflux column to make absinthe. The latter to make your neutral base and the former to distill the macerated herbs. You'll also need some way of keeping the herbs away from the elements otherwise they'll scorch. I use a bain-marie or double boiler but I know someone who has had good success with suspending the macerated herbs in a hops bag. Use the best quality herbs you can buy or preferably, grow your own.

And don't forget - l'absithe c'est la mort!

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

A fascinating project. I make a range of cosmetics as a side issue to staying alive and making a few dollars. I have a double boiler and a small laboratory type still. I grow fennel in my home garden but I may have trouble sourcing wormwood and anise but I am going to try. Now I have my T500 producing some very clean spirit this should be fun ...

Welcome. I don't know where you are, but for any one interested i have found a nursery in the Adelaide hills area with Artemesia absinthum and pontica, it's the only nursery in the town of Woodchester. Can't remember the name. My plants are too small to harvest anything but i have made some rather tasty Absinthish stuff from A. arboresens? The stuff that grows wild all over Adelaide. Have fun doing it.

Sorry Permaclutter, if you didn't use artemisia absinthium then I'm afraid you didn't make absinthe.

Yes indeed Professor, i was saddened to find out that the plant i had always known as wormwood and believed to be the right thing for absinthe was not the right one. Bit of a bugger as i could get that by the ute load.

Wow everyone, thank you so much for all your help!

Wobblyboot I love the article, looking through an reading it now, thank you!!!

Prof. Green Thanks for the hint!

Arismac what sort of cosmetics do you make?

Permaclutter finding the herbs and good quality do seem to be a challenge, might start looking at growing my own ...

I'm so glad I joined this forum, everyone seems lovely, I can't wait to share my story and hopefully listen to some of your stories.

I have the t500 going in the background now, very exciting!
