Gals from Tas

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Gals from Tas

Postby Mne » Thu Apr 25, 2019 7:22 am

Hi all.

2 gals from Tas who thought we'd have a go at it.
We've had our share of beginner misadventures (a few spills, a crash when the weather turned and never enough buckets:)) but somehow we managed to coerce a couple of vodkas and a half decent white rum from our eBay worm setup.
Thankfully had some sake running as backup during the long waits.

Anyway, thought we'd start to consider a new setup and came across this wonderful place!
Looking forward getting to know you all, and to perusing the wealth of information you have available.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome ladies.

Sounds like you're looking to do a little bit of everything spirit wise; I would recommend having a look at the modular stills from 5 Star if you want something off the shelf. A Neutraliser will give you the ability to do most kinds of spirits depending on how you configure it. Being modular, you can start out with a pot still and build it up over time (like Meccano for drunks!). If you're not looking to go that big then there other options such as a 2" boka for neutral and a 2" or 4" pot still for flavoured runs.

Oh, and the milk can boilers are awesome!

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Thanks for the warm welcomes:)

You're about bang on there Prof. Green.
We're thinking the 2" modular setup looks about right, that's the one with a shotgun condenser, and the milk can looks really great if we can manage the outlay. Aesthetically it's all down our street that way too, straightforward and not too many gadgets unless we need them later. Devilishly good looking too of course!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I would just like to point out that you won’t be able to make vodka or neutral out of the 2” pot that your looking at and you won’t be able to add to it to make it do neutral.
Just something to consider before jumping in

Looking for neutral spirit so you can do your own thing with essences then a well managed Reflux like the T500 is the way to go in my opinion. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the welcome :)
Haven't had that much joy with anything plain on the eBay pot either.
It's ok, sure, but never quite clean enough, even after a stripping run and a couple of slower passes.
From what I understand a reflux condenser would do the job better for the neutral stuff?
Thankfully vodka isn't the favorite drop, it's white rum which seems to have come out rather well by comparison.

Hi Arismac.
Thanks for welcoming us to the forum :)

I hope I'm not too far off base, but one of the things that is appealing about those 2" setups is that the bits can be swapped out as needed, and that those tri-clamp components are somewhat universal,
at least that's my limited understanding of it.
So it could have a shotgun condenser one batch and a reflux the next...that sort of thing.

Pretty green here though and It's highly likely that I am totally wrong of course!
The T500 looks great, but I haven't come across any info on if it can run like a pot still for a white rum?

Welcome to the forum!
Do pleanty of reading on the different types of stills and what they do before you decide.. only you 2 will really know what type of still ticks your boxes.
Good luck with whatever you decide. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I wouldn’t recommend using a t500 as a pot still, it has plastic parts at top which are prone to leaking if run too hot.
Here is a Bacardi style white rum viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7648&hilit=Bacardi

Hi Wobblyboot

Yeah, not sure the T500 will make it to the final list.
Leaning pretty heavily toward a 5 Star solution at this stage, unless something else turns up...

Very interesting thread, thanks very much:)

Hey Ladies.
Wecome to the forum.
I have recently upgraded from 10 years of running a T500 the wrong way to a FSB Neutraliser.
I’m waiting for my sparky to finish some wiring but hoping to enjoy the flexibility it provides.
One of the main reasons I went for it is time, a 4” should be faster than a 2”, and flexibility(rum, whisky, clear spirits). :obscene-drinkingdrunk:
Don’t tell Andrew but I might want another head for gin next year.
