Hi Guys

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Hi Guys

Postby NeddyJ » Tue Jan 21, 2020 4:59 pm

Hi Guys! Thought i'd finally introduce myself considering i have been on here since 2016! (mostly have been lurking in the background reading up) found more time to get into it so thought id get more involved.

Just finished building a 4" LM which i will post photos if requested as i documented it (sort of).

I mostly make vodkas and some funky gins if people are interested, and if they taste good i will share recipes.

Cheers!

Welcome NeddyJ.

We don't request pics, we demand them!

:text-worthless:

I reckon there's going to be definite interest in your gin recipes too.

Cheers,

This is start of the boka head, and went with a kind of moat design which im sure has been done before

2" to 4" with the 2" lopped off so that a piece of 2" can fit through snugly with a cap placed on top

I press fitted a stainless ferrule into some 4" i had laying around which turned out to be american stuff so with a little persuasion it got there.

Did the same with the top half and bored the hole for the exit

I know i will get the comment but yes i did test this when it was all finished and i did actually get a small leak with the press fitting, so i soldered it up using stay bright flux so the stainless to copper was relatively easy.

All soldered up. And added some brass braid for fun.

For the column itself, i bought a 1m length of 304 stainless off ebay and had my mate tig weld the ferrules onto it and electro-polish it

For the condenser itself, i bought a 10m roll of 9.5mm copper which i ended up using 6m of.

For the cap i cut down the middle of some of that copper pipe i had (I know it hurt me too) and annealed it with my home made torch, flattened it, and made it round.

The caps with the filed in grooves are the cap for the venting hole on top, which i only ended up using one of as you can see.

Finally i soldered it all up with a standard brass fitting which can take a standard snap on attachment for water.

Also i originally wanted to stretch out the coil a bit, though a couple problems got in the way. Firstly it was hard as heck, then i also had limited room to stretch it as it would start to interfere with the lower part, and lastly when i tested it with water and both water and vinegar, it was able to easily knock down those vapours with no problems at all.

To contain the packing which i will be using (black scoria) i made up a perforated piece using the same method as the condenser cap, though using 2"

All completed with a previously built liebig condenser and a 2" to 4" adapter to the keg ( i plan on replacing the standard fitting to a 4" ferrule.)

I also added a thermowell for my temp gauge which sits out of the way of the refluxed condensate.

I know i there is a bit of a thing with the use of brass on the collection side, a budget was kind of holding me back and i can always replace it. Also tested it for lead, pickled it and tinned it just to be sure.
