Breaking in new still, no vinegar

Postby Stereo » Thu Mar 19, 2020 8:40 pm

Hey all,

So I have just recently gotten a new still and I know that it is recommended to clean the still with a 50/50 distillation of vinegar/water and then a spirit run.

My question is, due to the panic buying I am unable to buy and vinegar, I've tried several shops multiple times and they are all out, I have about 2 ltrs of vinegar but it is pretty old so not sure how good it would be. Thankfully I was able to purchase enough sugar before the panic and have got 2 mash's going. Will it be enough to just run one of these mash's through to clean the still or does it really need the vinegar run?

Cheers

Welcome stereo.
I moved your post to the welcome center since this is your first post.
vinegar isn’t the only way to clean a new still.
Tell us a little about the still and yourself

Just use the old vinegar, it'll be fine. And welcome :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks.

I have a new copper T500 and copper Alembic pot still, the carbon drip filter, 25 ltr boiler. I haven't distilled before but I have done home brewing on and off for a while.
I'm planning on doing mostly rum but later on will get into the whiskey's as well.

Welcome Stereo.

Given the scarcity of sugar at the moment, save your washes for your proper runs and take your pick from either dbs or Stigs advice. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
