howdy from tazzy

Say Hi and introduce yourself

howdy from tazzy

Postby sloth » Sat Mar 28, 2020 2:31 pm

Howdy brains trust, i joined a little while ago and have just been lurking, reading and trying stuff.
Anyways ive just stepped up my game to try making rum (buccaneer bobs recipe) and wanted to know about how you judge the ABV of the wash.
For eg: in a 200L drum i added 25Kg molasses to 160L ish water and used red star DADY yeast

SG 1050

then i remembered that molasses will give a false high reading... ?? anyways in 1 day it fermented 20 points down to 1030
and i added another 25Kg of molasses and 12kg raw sugar bringing the gravity back up to 1090.
Wash appears to have settled now FG 1030, so ive turned the heat off to cold crash it tonight run stripping tomorrow.

So is the relationship between gravity points eaten up linear to ABV?
eg: in my case can i say day 1 20 points gravity + day day 2 etc used a further 60 points gravity = the same as 80 points gravity???
in other words would what ive done be the same as saying i have a wash at 1080 it fermented out to 1000 my ABV is 10.5%??

thanks in advance :)

Touch heavy on fermentable you have about 1kg:4L sugar water you really want about 1:5 max. Gravity wise it would be same as adding all together at start but because you stagged the addition of fermentable you prob get better/less harsh flavour then if you added it all at once. Also may get lower fg. if you add to many fermentables then they are just wasted and you end up with higher fg..and un fermented sugar in final wash resulting in puking...especially rum

cheers for welcome guys.

ok bluc, good to know ill play with it a bit next time. i was actually thinking my abv would be too low (hence the raw sugar) coz total volume seems to have come out at about 180L.
anyways i will do some stripping runs tomorrow and see how its looks. will let you know how it goes, thanks for the help mate.

I do 20l mollasses and 25kg sugar in 180l volume. I end up with 10-12l depending on quality molasses..

Ulwd = ultra low watt density. Different elements have different watt density which means how hot it gets over a given length. You neeed ultra low or can burn wash. Where you get it? How long is it 2000w aint huge amount power mine is two loops 1800w each loop. Each loop is about 60cm total length bent over into a u shape so goes in about 30cm to keg. Never burnt a wash.
Ones andrew sell are great :handgestures-thumbupleft:

howdy andrew mate :)

heya bluc so im not sure on the details tbh. i'll ask damien who built it.

but heres what i know

kettle is a 50L keg
the element is encased in its own stainless tube thats open at the end so i cant physically see it
damian told me its a 2000w hot water system heater

ive had no burning issues till now having done 5 cornflakes whiskey batches in store bought 30L fermenters (thanks again andrew :) )
im wondering if it could be sulphur in the molasses its 0.40%
or maybe its an issue with the barrel itself?
could it be too many unfermented sugars in the wash? FG was 1030
i put up a post elsewhere here about this but no answers there lol

so,
200L barrel (possible contaminate, it wasnt used for food originally. original material was Styrene Phosphonic Acid i added a photo of the MSDS bellow)

so i cleaned the barrel before use with tri cleanium (a chlorine based cleaner) then again with bleach, then rinsed it out with water till i couldnt smell anything

sorry for rambling... ive been drinking cornflakes...

how hard would it be for me to tap in another element (one of these ULWD ones)? it would be nice to have a faster time to reach boil anyways

ok, so i need another element i guess. in the short term if i was to limit the power would i be able to get the rest done without burning it?
and is the burned stuff salvageable?
