Yellow From Newcastle

Hi and thanks for the add

Just a quick background on my brewing history.

Started brewing beer in December 2018 when gifted a Coopers HomeBrew kit from the wife.
With 30 brews under my belt.
Started kegging in September 2019 with a Keg King Series 4 keg fridge.
Started all grain brewing in January 2020 with the help of a Brewzilla 35L.
6 all grain brews later

The choice to purchase the Brewzilla 35L was made with the option to distill using the AlcoEngine Reflux or Pot Still.

As I need a HLT to sparge with, Ive decided to convert a keg into a kettle.
This kettle will have a sight glass and 4” ferrule on top also leaving the 2” beer dip tube hole.
This will give me the option to also attach the 2” Reflux Still and use it as a boiler.

After thinking that the same rules apply with making beer to distilling, I’m having second thoughts.
With it being tax fraud if caught with a still or distillate seems more like a revenue scheme than from a place of safety.

I’ve watch a lot of videos from Jessie on the YouTube channel Still It.
He makes good videos that look and seem very easy and safe to make spirits.
It seems the Kiwis are laughing at us from across the pond as it is completely legal to distill in New Zealand.

I know a lot of people who distill and judging by forms and Facebook groups there are a lot indulging in the craft.

I’m going to keep my spirit making very quite.

I look forward to reading the knowledge this group has to offer.

Thanks again.

Welcome.

I have been all grain brewing for years (15? i cant remember exactly) and love it.
If you brew more than 6 gallons (22.7 liters) then technically you are breaking the law, which is achievable in your 35L beast, but I'm just going to assume that you only make enough to fill one keg (5 gallons) at a time, all good.

Cheers

Have you got a link to that?

I have always been led to believe you can make as much beer and wine as you like at home...

This is what I found

http://www.dassa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cf ... production

The Production and Distribution of Alcohol
Under the Distillation Act 1901 (Cwlth) it is an offence to distil any spirit without first obtaining a licence from the Excise Business Line of the Australian Taxation Office (maximum penalty $5000).
It is also an offence to make, possess, sell or purchase any illicit spirits regardless of the proposed use (maximum penalty $5000).
The production of beer or wine without a licence is not an offence provided the production is not for commercial purposes, as specified by the Excise Tariff Act 1921 (Cwlth).
The production of fortified wine requires a permit from the Excise Business Line of the Australian Taxation Office. Permits are only granted for commercial purposes.
Under the Customs Act 1901 (Cwlth) an individual is permitted to bring into the country 2.25 litres of alcoholic liquor (including wine, beer, or spirit) per person aged 18 years or over, before import duty is charged.

Nothing about volume limit..
