Hi from a noob in melbourne

Postby Rumblepants » Thu May 07, 2020 5:14 pm

Hi People,

I got given an airstill from a mate did a couple of runs of goon and now I want to do something worthwhile :D

Been reading heaps and am planning to make a combo reflux/pot sitll as I have little funds and want to get the most flexible setup.

I want to make whiskeys, rums, brandys and vodka. Currently fermenting a Nutrigrain wash from the Tried and true section.

Any leads on where to get 2 inch copper pipe on the cheap is welcome. I have a plumber mate on it but I've no idea if he'll come through or not.

Cheers and looking forward to the banter

Welcome to AS Rumble.

Goon through an air still must have been pretty ordinary. The nutrigrain wash will definitely give you better results. WBAB is another good one to try.

There's heaps of great DIY ideas floating around the forums.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Scrap yards are good for copper. Some can be a bit funny and not want to sell to the public and others can be great about it. timming and attitude can make all the difference. And G'day

Welcome to AD!
I got a fair amount of my copper for my last couple builds from a local plumber. They get quite a few offcuts that they are happy to part with... well this was my experience anyway.
I did go through their fittings stash and got a few goodies too.
Good luck with your build when the time comes.

Gday mate, I’d suggest building a boka if you want the flexibility on a budget or ditch the vodka and build a pot still for your whiskey/ rum

Thanks guys. I'm reading and researching. The wash is done and ready to strip and strip and strip then spirit run through the Airstill lol.

I thought the Goonshine was ok but then I prolly have low standards haha.

Hitting up my plumber mate tomorrow to see if he has anything for me :)

I ended up going to my local plumbing supplier and making nice. They'll usually give you trade price and my 2" cost me less than 30 bucks a metre, 10bucks for fittings.

What was your clever excuse for needing the copper pipe? Making a modern abstract sculpture or something?

I ended up going to Plumbers Supplies Melbourne in Preston. They were really nice and when asked I said I was building a still. He said he had a mate with one and we got into a dialogue. They sold me 4m of 50mm pipe cut it into two lengths for me and sold me some weld on fittings. highly recommend them.
