Double whiskey heads

Double whiskey heads

Postby Distilled » Fri Aug 21, 2020 1:12 pm

Hi all, this is my first post here so hello!
I have a 200 litre column still with a whiskey head (onion ball) below the 4 plates and I have added another on top of the 4 plates. Long story, but the one that came with my still was not level and was therefore replaced. Doing my cleaning run with water and vinegar I am getting the results I expected with the top plate housing all most 3/4 full or bubbling product and the lower plate almost 1/3 full with the lower 2 at normal low levels.
My question is, has anyone tried this before? I’ll be Distilling gin and interested to see if this will cause problems or a benefit. Either way it looks nice :wtf:
Thanks in advance legends!

For gin I can't see any benefit. I wouldn't even bother with the plates for gin as long as you are starting with a neutral base spirit.

Yes, I agree but the still has been built to cater for other spirits also which I’ll eventually try but I didn’t want to be dismantling it all the time. The plates are going to strip out some flavour but I’m also hoping they will help with spending the flavours a little. Possibly not but there is a local distiller near me that even has their gin basket before the plates as they said the plates help the flavours meld together better.
