Hi, this site looks like an awesome source of knowledge - pleased to become part of your community.

Complete newbie to distilling but my younger brother in the UK has had good success with gin so thought I would give it a go. Hopefully it will satisfy my love of a challenge, and spirits.

Cheers,

Graham

Thanks guys.

HG I went down the (seemingly very common from reading around) T500 copper still route. I figured this is a good solid starting point to learn on then, perhaps, move on up from there.

The thing I am still trying to get my head around is if I need a pot still as well?!

Lots of reading to do.

Cheers,

Graham

Welcome mate! :greetings-waveyellow:
Good bunch on here with pleanty of great advice. Your T500 will make vodka/ neutral spirits but if you want to make brown spirits you will need a pot still.

Hi Graham,

Yeah been there, I did the same only upgraded this week.

You will learn heaps using the T500, I would suggest that you look in the forum on the “right way to run a T500” and you will end up with a better product.

You can get a decent drop with practice.

Re a pot still, depends on what you want to make. If it’s gin, rum, whiskey then yes.
You can do “bathtub” gins without a pot still initially but obviously you won’t end up with a clear gin.

Best thing is that there is an amazing amount of info on this site and most questions have been asked and answered somewhere. You will just have to trawl through or ask and someone will point you to where the info you require is.

I would also suggest that you reach out to Andrew from 5star as he will be able to point you in the best direction if you choose to buy a pot still as there are modular options that can be bolted onto your existing boiler.

This will then set you up for any future upgrades you make when (not if :)) ) you get hooked.

Happy for you to PM me if you have any further questions.

Cheers

HG
