Hello - from Microscopy to Distilling - How did I get here?

Hello,

I have ended up here in a roundabout way!

I am a beekeeper, in Yorkshire, UK, who is studying for a Microscopy exam and as part of that process I have to produce pollen/bee slides. The problem is that I live in a very hard water area and deposits are left on the slide from washing.

I started to look at Air Still for water distillation and as I make a lot of mead a friend suggested I look at an Air Still so that I could produce the distilled water and I could also try to distill some of my home brew.

Having had a poke around this forum I have decided to start with the basics of TPW to learn, and when more experienced, hope to make Gins. If that works out I will look at distilling some of the different meads that I make.

Any thoughts on distilling mead? Any suggestions would be very welcome as there seems to be a lot of constructive help and advice offered here.

Welcome, I’m an ex Yorkshireman myself.
May I suggest that you bypass the air still and go for the T500
Or if you hell bent on the air still DO NOT DO THE TPW.
You will end up with a weak, alcoholic tomato soup.
Go with a weetbix or something like that.

Welcome to AD.

:text-+1: on running a cereal wash with the air still. Being a pot style still it won't remove all of the flavour of the wash so with TPW you'll effectively be making tomato whisky. The residual flavour from a cereal based wash will be far more pleasant.

You will struggle to make gin with just the air still though as you need to start with a very good neutral base before you add your botanical flavourings.

There's a thread in the post still section on getting the most out of the air still - well worth a read.

There maybe a thread or two on meads floating around the forum if you search for them. There's a couple of ways to search the site - the "AD Search" button below the main banner is probably the best.

As stated I am committed to the Air Still (distilled water for the microscopy)!!!!
