Lets see if I can bugger this up...

Postby Harryn » Mon Dec 07, 2020 8:04 pm

Hi all, Harry here.
I have been researching this dark art for some time now and it is time to take the plunge and see if countless hours of reading and watching youtube are going to pay off.
Hopefully, I'll be able to produce something a bit reasonable and have some fun in the process. I have all the ancillary equipment I need for the job, but I am trying to decide on which still to go for. So many choices. Primarily my aim is to produce a drinkable whisky but would also like to produce a neutral spirit as well. Let's see what's going to happen...

Welcome Harry.

Be very wary of what you've seen on youtube, there's a lot of misinformation out there.

If you're looking to do whisky and neutral you'll need a pot still for the former and a reflux column for the latter. I can see a modular bubbler with a packed section in your future so you can use 4 plates for single run whisky and 5 plates plus the packed section for neutrals.

How much room do you have in which to run your still? Are you looking to buy off-the-shelf or build it yourself?

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Hi Prof, thanks for that. As for room, yes that could be a bit of an issue. Though I am rather handy with a saw :laughing-rolling:
I'd love to build one myself, but I'll see what is out there. For sake of ease, I'm not averse to buying off the shelf. Just don't want to waste money on buying the wrong one.
Cheers,
H.

The rig in the for sale section is a good rig.
I was thinking about buying it to put on the 5 Star archive wall with the original blockhead rig

Welcome Harryn,

You might also consider a Boka style rig. Very versatile and makes a great drop and great value for money.

As a T500 owner I'd recommend you DON'T buy one. Although if you try hard you can get a good product out of them, there are better products out there in that price range.

Welcome Harryn
Like you I was a complete noob and I only took the plunge 3 months ago.
Stick with the advice on here in the newbie section mate and you won’t go wrong.
You might need to read it a few times but it is well worth it.
Good luck

Thanks Tesla, I'm open to all suggestions, though I don't think I've heard anyone have much good to say about the T500.

Hey harryn
I took it in stages mate. First what did I want to make, what do I enjoy drinking most, whiskey and bourbon so pot still is answer for me given bubbler was not an option at this stage. I did however buy one I could upgrade later.
Next was to choose a starting recipe BWKO was my choice , so I read and reread the post on it as well as reading and rereading the cuts post.
Baby steps mate it is well worth the time and effort and a glorious feeling knowing that you started with the raw materials and turned it into an enjoyable drink
