Saying "Hi" from Brisbane

Postby Barjacjohn » Sun Oct 02, 2022 4:37 pm

Retired guy who got chucked out of chemistry at school for being too creative! Received an air still for Christmas last year and enjoying playing. So far been trying to get a really smooth neutral then exploring essences. First was a red grapefruit gin essence plus a bit of pink food dye and some red grapefruit zest to increase look and flavour. Then got some London Gin essence and soaked some butterfly pea flowers to make magic gin! Both well received. Tried to make some rum, but while colour and flavour from essences seems ok, I cant seem to get a "rum smell"! More work needed. My wife loves espresso coffee liqueur.
Started with turbo, then tpw, now fermenting with wheatbix. Using yeast left over from bread making. Would still like a smoother neutral to build on!
Onward and upward!

Welcome Bar
Stick with the wheat bix wash mate it is a great base when using a pot still. The airstill is a pot still mate.

You could always try stripping runs through the airstill(normal run on a airstill) then when you have 4 litres of low wines run it through the airstill again and take small collects , say 50 ml each, and then do cuts. It will double distill the spirit and give you a smoother product.

It is a lot more work but you might be a little surprised at the results :)
