Hey All!

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Hey All!

Postby Stu » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:12 pm

Well hi everyone!

I'm very new to the distilling scene, i played around with brewing my own beer while a broke student and have dipped in and out over the past few years too, i guess i was naturally drawn in this direction!

Currently have 40litres of sugar wash using alcotec 48 turbo yeast clearing for my first crack at distilling tomorrow, any essential tips before i start would be more than welcome!

Cheers all :text-thankyoublue:

If your not familiar with making cuts when making spirits then definitely read this.

http://aussiedistiller.com.au/Novice%20Guide%20for%20Cuts%20%28pot%20still%29.pdf

Many people starting out ( me included ) don't realise there is more to making spirits then simply throwing away the first bit and drinking the rest... There is more to it than that and if you make good cuts you will make better spirit.

Also can't speak highly enough of the TPW, aka - Tomato Paste Wash, a cheap alternative to home brew shop ingredients that makes a fine neutral spirit, give it a look under tired and proven in recipes for something to try next time perhaps.

Cheers

Welcome Stu,

From a very distant memory I recall the Alcotech 48 hour yeast had a fairly strong fores/early heads issue...I reckon i was discarding something like twice the normal fores to avoid the problem ...somthing like 150 - 200ml on 25lt boiler ...which is why i haven't used turbos for years ...taste! Just make plenty of smaller cuts 50ml - 75ml say x 4 early and sort it out after its been run by normal tests....
