Another newbie.

Postby minimalist_1 » Tue Sep 25, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi all, another newbie here from Melbourne. Just about to embark on building a 2inch bokabob on a 50lt keg and am currently gathering materials. The first thing I'm wonderi if anyone in melb can help me with is the details of somewhere I can get a decommissioned CUB keg. And second the best method of attaching a 2inch or 50mm bokabob still to said keg. Cheers in advance.

G'day Mini.
The link below will show you one way of attaching your still to the keg, These flanges are very easy to make and it works very well. Others will more than likely be along with other ideas.

Thanks for the link, I havnt seen this method of flange before, looks easy enough. Where do you get the keg clamp from? Alo I do have a keg but is an English barrel shaped 45lt, do you think it will still be ok. It still has the same coupler as a CUB keg and I'm lucky enough to own a keg spanner which easily takes out the spire.

Mini, BE SURE to release ANY PRESSURE in that keg before you attempt to remove the spear.

For shore i was told the story by a mate his neighbour and small kid bought over a keg and asked can you remove the spear so mate got a large screwdriver and pushed down on the ball [ more like drove it in with a hammer ] the resulting shower of stinking beer covered the three of them also my mates ss commodore [holden ]

That's actually not what the warning was about - it's more that releasing the whole spear under pressure while standing over it will smash your face in

Yes, I'm aware of the dangers of pressurised kegs. My dads business used to import English keg beer for years. At best you get covered in stale beer at high pressure. At worse the spear let's go and empales you. Dad once had one shoot out at speed passed his head. Not fun.

Anyway I will give the keg I have ago, I took the spear out years ago, it just isn't the prettiest keg around pretty banged up! Then when a better one comes up I'll replace it.

Incidentally, if anyone who reads this is in the pakenham area of Melbourne I have the correct brewery tool for removing the spear. If anyone needs one taking out.

So this was the tool I was talking about. I got it from the 'Ind Coop' brewery in Burton upon trent, UK. It fits the pommy kegs and believe should fit a cub keg too, once the circlip is out.
