Kiwi in Melbourne

So thought I should probably make an intro, finally managed to check my posts to see if I had or not.

I'm on HD,MD,AD etc and I lose track haha

Moved to Melbourne in July, and am going though with drawl

Have some experience with reflux stills and the T500

Brewed beer once or twice

Looking at getting a 4" hybrid still and 50L milk can boiler at some stage just got to wait until I move atm as I don't have the space.

However I thought I would get back into brewing beer to start (and start stocking up on TPW so I can practice running neutrals)

Anyone know of the best way to build up my brewing gear again

Ideally id like to have two 30L fermentors

Been looking at this kit and then buying another fermentor on top

http://discounthomebrewwarehouse.com.au ... cts_id=322

However that works out to be about 200 including freight (im not being cheap but don"t want to waste money)

Eventually want to get into all grain brewing etc and do whisky, bourbon, rum runs etc :p

Thoughts comments?

Welcome mate.
When I was starting out, I kept my eye out on gumtree and ebay for home brew kits. I managed to get 30L fermenter, tap airlock etc. and a heap of bottles for $40.

Mainly Wellington but I lived in Dunedin for 8 years, Blenhiem(Woodbourne) for 10months ish and Auckland (Whenuapai) for 8ish months

So have moved around a little

Melbourne seems ok so far still trying to settle in, I am getting itchy feet atm though.

Welcome aboard.
50l keg makes a good boiler. :-)
You can clamp all sorts of goodies straight to them :-)

So my new gear arrived yesterday

Still need to finish plumbing it up and have my replacement element arrive to wire up

I have a 4800W element and the plug in my house thats meant to be rated at 20Amp is only wired up for 10Amp :S (has a 20amp fuse as well)

Good thing I double checked the wiring, seems the house I live in has had cowboys install shit

So have a 2400W element on the way as I don't want to risk things

Yeah I may re plumb it later not sure if I am happy with the placement of the needle valves

Height was a bit low fully needs a packed section and two more plates

Or an extension at the bottom for when I do Dark spirits

Currently making an All grain pale ale using the Biab method (3 batches to fill my 30L fermenter)

Going to make 2 batches of Macwhiskey using the spent grain (2kg spent grain instead of 1Kg unspent)

Today I moved from the fermenters into bottles till I have an empty still (my 50L milk can currently has 14-15L of Weetbix wash in it waiting on the other batch to finish) one nutrigrain wash (about 20L worth) I have saved the yeast and nutrigrain that was left in the bottom and put it in a pot for my next brew

Also combined the backset of two modified cfw's into one fermenter

Still need to buy a packed section and another plate for my setup but atm two passes slow through the 4plate set up gives a pretty good vodka

Plan is to run the weetbix through twice let it air and then take what I think is the best for a few bottles

The left over will go into the big jar along with all the other stuff that didnt make the cut ready for a 2nd distill to be made into neutral :)

Currently have a 2.75L jar of modified CFW (63%) with 2.5 med toast american oak dominoes coming up on 6weeks

The Nutrigrain ill do 3 1L jars at 63% using different oak in each one and potentially take a white dog to save

Really starting to stock up now YAY however I did finished 2 bottles with a mate the other night and I really need to make some more cider to run as apple brandy :D

I need to go get some grain from the grain and grape, I paid $30 for 6kg of pale malt today :s but I wanted it today and it was local
