Hello from country Vic

Postby wrapper » Thu Oct 24, 2013 8:16 am

Hello everyone , l have been using a reflux still for a few years now , doing what l have been told from the home brew shop (buy this, put this in , soak bourbon in these wood chips ETC ) .
l was researching on the net proper ways to clean and maintain my still when l came across this site and was blown away by what people in here can do , so l joined and hopefully can learn and find people in here to point me in the right direction to increase my knowledge of "what l can do" "why" and "how"
Thanks everyone Wrapper

Welcome mate, like JayD said, the more you read, the more you will see how much there is to the hobby. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.

Welcome from another Newbie, I have come ahead in leaps and bounds since joining this site, made a few stuff ups, but with the help of this site all is back on track.
It seems there is not a problem these guys can't help you with, except maybe keeping in sweet with the misses...... :laughing-rolling:

Welcome aboard mate, I would say there is only a small percentage of people here that didn't start with a HBS rig and turbos :handgestures-thumbupleft:

All that shit is behind you now though, time to make some decent swill :D

I didn't start with a HBS still and turbo's, but my first still is a homemade 3" pot still on a 50L keg...

It really depends on what you want to make/drink... If you want whiskeys/rums etc, you want a pot or a bubbler. If you want vodkas and guns, you'll need a reflux or a bubbler.

Pots are easy and cheap, bubblers are harder and more expensive, refluxes are somewhere in the middle depending on specs...

Are you looking to build or buy a still?

Zak, tks for the photo of your 1st still very interesting , at moment lm making a clear base , using sugar adding assents to make scotch and bourbon and with the bourbon l soak it in wood chips for a few mth to give it a woody taste all very basic compared to in here but up until now have been happy with what l make.
Now lm asking myself what else can l make using what .
As for your ? about making my own still to tell the truth never thought about it until l found this site maybe down the track

Well if you drink bourbon, you'll probably want a pot still... If you don't want to build one, you might want to get onto JayD, a member here who builds and sells copper stills out of Tassy.

As for recipes, have a look in the 'tried and true' forum, there's a few recipes there for bourbon type whiskeys :)
