Hey all
Just like most of us new to this site I have been doing a lot of reading here.man there is so much to this distilling it makes me wonder how my old man and his mates produced grappa in the back shed and make a good drop. I love my bourbon and like a good scotch. I've made a very simple copper pot still 1' pipe, dam price for copper hurts. Its the all grain mash and its varieties that I am interested in learning and mastering to some degree. Thanks to all for this site and all the knowledge within. I hope with time to share my journey here and have some fun n good times with y'all.

Welcome shine,

Start simple and build, AG if fine time consuming but enjoyable really. Plenty of good drops to be had as grain/sugarhead combos.

If you need a hand sourcing in Adelaide sing out.

enjoy!

hey guys
thanks for saying g'day. Hi Andy yes I've run my still and have made 2 sugar wash's. Both didn't turn out. The first one stunk like crap as it was brewing and tasted the same. The second smelt fine brewing just the taste wasn't quite right but was a slight improvement on the first. Now I'm working on a barley mash and a corn, barley, wheat and rye mash. They both smell almost good enough to eat and sweet to the taste. Found some American white oak and going to do some toasting and charring to see what they will both do.
Thanks bt1 will be knocking on your door at some stage for sure.
just a thought guys, would be interesting to do some tastings of what is being made. Just wondering if anyone is doing this here in Adelaide and elsewhere.
all the best and shineon y'all :D

Hey Shineon,
Glad you could join us mate. Just reading yr post, i might suggest you run yr sugarwashes thru a couple of times. Throw out the first bit every time and start lookin for the cuts.
There is plenty of info in the new guy section here on the subject.
And once yr looking at AG and sugarheads then it's a whole different, better ball game.
Have fun

welcome here Joe, yeah most sugar washes are for making vodka or neutral and not ideal for a pot still , it can be achieved but it will take multiple runs. your AGs rums ect will be good to go after 2 runs normally but a good neutral form a pot will be many more :handgestures-thumbupleft:

the sugar wash was something to do as I was reading up on my grain washes',i did however put then both through 2 x and kept it for lighting up my home made pizza oven, yum. What is it with the feed barley guys? It seems to smell like a nice cup of tea when i'm mashing it
thanks again :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Howdy,

spent many months on plain un malted barely based washes with no success.

two things occurred. Firstly was the most vicious undrinkable bite to it, it would take years to mellow (Bushmills anyone :D ). Various suppliers, grades, washing b4 use, ended up using 50/50 with a pils plain malt...better but nothing to write home about.

And secondly I discovered dry skin non waxy potatoes...a gift...there's always a silver lining somewhere. Continue to use these with a 6 row plain malt and some mid colour Barratt Burson caramalts to great effect= Irish.

cheers
