Hi All

Postby viking » Wed Dec 04, 2013 10:48 pm

G'day everyone,

I'm new to distilling. Brewed a few beers before.

I'll just sit back and learn for awhile.
What I have learnt already there is a lot more to offer that what our local hardware has.
I'll churn out some cheap an nastys while I have the airstill.

So much too learn, so much rum.........

Cheers

welcome mate i to also have a airstill i find that it is a great little unit if you dont have the space (like a shed) to run a pot still i turn out a good drop with my air still
my advice to you is to first ditch all of the turbo stuff and give this a go viewtopic.php?f=32&t=8 tomato paste wash is far cheaper than the turbo stuff it tastes much better and best of all no filtering required give it a go you wont be disappointed

I could be wrong here but I believe the Airstill is a pot still in which case you should be able to make a decent rum/whisky from it.

Thats right Dom, they are a sort of pot, and your probably right, they might make a better flavored spirit than a neutral.
If I was going down that path with one, Id strip enough wash to charge it with 40% strip then take lots of small cuts. You could probably make small quantities of fairly good spirit that way.

The best flavoured whisky I've made so far came out of my airstill.

Problem is when you've got 50, 100, 200L of wash to deal with...the airstill just takes so damn long it's not economical. I don't care how much you love running, eventually you just get sick of filling it up, collecting low wines and transferring spirit from one bottle to another to another.

Cheers All,

I have some plans next year to increase to size of the boiler and reduce the time.
It is the same old story across Australia - happy wife, happy life.
Keep the old cheese happy with gin = so every 3rd bottle - Gin cordial.
