Hi from db73

Hi all,

Looking forward to the hours of research (already started) to learn more about my new hobby.

A little about my self, I'm from the northside of Brissy and have a back ground in homebrewing beer (all grain)

It's funny i have already recognised some members here from another forum

I will shortly be looking at building my own rig. Just a very simple pot still for now.

I'm not so interested in just putting flavouring in alcohol to make whatever. I had some friends that used to distill and never really liked what they produced. Actually after a bit of a session on it i would get heart palpitations.

I like the idea of an all grain mash/wash that captures flavours in the end product. I have already found what looks to be a simple vodka recipe. I would then like to progress to making rum from molasses.

Anyway hope to see you all around here soon

Welcome to the forums mate. Your AG beer knowledge and equipment will definitely come in handy in this hobby!

You're on the right track with a pot still, and if you have a look here in the Tried and Proven recipe section you will find a few recipes for all grain whiskeys as well.

What do you like to drink?

Welcome mate, you will struggle to make decent vodka in a pot still, might need to consider a reflux as well.

Rum and bourbon will be fine :handgestures-thumbupleft:

G'day DB73, as has already be said your going to have a hard time making a good vodka with a pot still, it can be done but requires a bit of experience and the rooting around factor is high.
Id suggest you cut your teeth on Rum or UJ, if you want to learn to use a pot well. Both washes are easy to make and the results can be very rewarding once they have been oaked for a while.
I reckon a McWhisky wash would go well through a pot as well.

Thanks very much everyone

I'm like a sponge at the moment, absorbing a lot of information

I really enjoy the hardware side of things and can't wait to get building my rig

Where do most people get their 50 litre kegs from?

One of the first things i need to source

You can buy them from Keg King etc.

A rough location on your profile helps a lot as people near you can give you local knowledge :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I believe Geeps still has some kegs left.

Check his thread out here :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I think they're still full of cider though :shifty:
