Another hello from Adelaide

Hi everyone,

I'm keen to get into pot distilling grain washes, but have no gear and no plumbing/soldering/electrical skills :angry-banghead:

This seems like an excellent forum, very friendly and helpful, some of the pictures of stills you've posted are very impressive!

I figure I want a ~25L boiler/pot to get started, but maybe that's not right.. Any advice on where to obtain some good starter equipment?

(The Turbo500 obviously isn't appropriate, and the very handsome looking stuff from FSD seems a bit larger scale than I had in mind..)

Welcome to the forum, PGO. Good to see another South Aussie here :)

Sounds like you know what you're looking for. I'll suggest you look for a 50L boiler, especially if you plan on doing all-grain mashes.

Mac, from Five Star Distilling, can sell you a simple modular pot still which can gradually be turned into a bubbler if you so desire (which I think you will!)

Or, a 2" copper pot still isn't too hard to make (even for a beginner), and most of the bits needed can be found at Bunnings.

Hello PGO,

those skills you mentioned can be learnt...and fast... there's no surgery involved nor is it that complicated. it is however a methodical consistent calm approach needed and we all have or can learn that.... The other stuff...well plenty of advice here...

There's a fair degree of satisfaction to be had in building your own kit.. sure not for everyone but seriously consider it before deciding how you want to proceed.

If you need a hand or have questions while your deciding. .post em we all can help.

if you need a hand with Adelaide sourcing ask...plenty of experience here. Nothing wrong with a honest Pot still...good flavour and teaches plenty.

For a boiler past history of many and personal would suggest get a keg...even if you half fill it longer term it's the go and most migrate to 50lt kegs as boiler options if for nothing else than speed and convenience.

Enjoy the learning curve, plenty to read and some real nice mid term benefits of making your own well made tasty spirits :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Welcome here bud and yes a pot is very easy to make and a beer keg will be the easiest cheapest way to get a boiler

this is an amazing hobby ...I am new but learning curve has been steep...
I lucked out and got a 50lt keg ..heaps easy
My Babies keep growing... started with a bourbon fermentor...then a TPW one and now have a Rum one going ....

Welcome mate,

Im pretty new as well. I was going to make my own but recently changed my mind and am now saving for one of macs 4" bubblers (which from what I've read can be run as a pot still anyway if that's what you wanna do).
You've got plenty of reading ahead!

Welcome, I started with a hbs 25 litre pot still and finally upgraded to a keg and the 5 star pot still. Have been super happy and have 8 litres of bko in my oak keg.
If building is not an option and the goal is a bubbler, this gets you half way pretty cheaply and let's you make some great stuff straight away.
