Hello everybody I'm really enjoying reading through post that people have put up collecting info for my build of a cm copper still like most new guy I keep referring to the appendix of abbreviations to understand what everyone is talking about. But slowly making sense.

A little about my self I live in north perth and do fifo to Northern Territory with mechanical trade background I look forward to future conversations and getting help from you all when I get stuck on something.

Cheers sponge :text-thankyoublue:

Welcome mate, it can be a bit daunting at first but give it a bit of time and it will become second nature.

Welcome to the forums mate! Everything you need to know can be found here.

Can I ask why you want to build a CM, instead of a VM or LM?

Sorry for the late reply

The only reason I am building a cm is that is what a couple of guys have that I work with. so information is easily obtained by a quick visit to them although. I am doing a slightly different design than they got.

I did try research the pros and cons of a cm and other than a few people bagging it out ( without much explanation why) I couldn't see a reason why not.

Can you guys tell me why to avoid a cm?

This is my first still I'm building so before I get to far into it I would rather know now.

Cheers sponge

I dont know a huge amount about reflux stills, but the general consensus around the different forums seems to be that CMs can be a bit fiddly to run.
LM's and VM are a more popular choice for that reason, Im sure there is more to it than just that, but that is the basics as far as I understand it.
That is if its a reflux still your hoping to build.
A bubbler is also a type of CM.

equipment: (The Pelican) a 2 inch pot / stripper on 25L electric boiler interchangable with T500 reflux still...... 2 1/2 inch pot still on 50L keg (gas burner).....
3 inch Boka (half share with Draino),...... 4 inch 4 plate perforated plate Bubbler

Yes it is will be a reflux not a bubbler.

The design I am doing I haven't been able to find on the internet so all sizing and measurements of tubes are from memory and research as I start tigging everything together I will post photos.

I am also building a pot still at the same time.

Reasoning behind it is that stainless is available to me at the moment so make both while I can.

How about you put up a drawing of what you are going to build before you start building, there is an old CM design that isn't the best, I hope your not planning on building one :?

It will have an 8 inch double helix cooling coil and stainless scrubbers it will be jacketed and the outlet will run through the cooled jacket I think 1.4 m of 10mm tube is what I managed to squeeze into the outlet coil

Welcome to the forum.

It'd be easier, probably cheaper and more effective to build a Boka, mate...

CM's are finicky to run, especially if you plan on using a recirculating system for cooling water...

Also, the way you have your PC jacketed around the column is going to make it even harder to run... Much better off with a Liebig (which you will also be able to use for your pot, if done right)

Why the need for copper in the vapour path? What does it do to the product?

I understand you saying it will be finicky but in what way will I be constantly adjusting coolant or will I be always tweaking something?

And I wasn't planning on using a recirculating system.

It removes the sulphide's, giving you a cleaner product
