G'Day

Say Hi and introduce yourself

G'Day

Postby Iffy » Wed Mar 12, 2014 6:56 am

G'day all,

I've been brewing beer for years and have decided that I need a new challenge.
I am building a 50L keg boiler for a FSD 4" modular pot still i have just ordered :)
The plan is to upgrade the 4" pot to a bubbler/plated later on once my skills have... well when i can say i have some skill at this..
The boiler should be finished in the next week or so.
I decided to get the pot because im a whiskey & rum drinker when im not knocking back the beers...

Cheers,

Iffy.

Welcome mate :greetings-waveyellow:

Your beer brewing knowledge should help you as you delve further into the hobby here.

You've made a good choice in equipment for the drinks you like, and you can always upgrade it bit by bit until you have what you want :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Get stuck into some hardcore reading in the Newbies Corner, and you'll be underway.

I’ve got my boiler at an operational stage, setup the pot and done a cleaning run :)
and I have a 30L 'ish TWP on the go at the moment for a sacrificial brew / test run.
The only problem I have is that the reservoir for the PC isn’t large enough (60L bin...) :handgestures-thumbdown: , but a 190L
Olive drum is on the cards when i get back from work, I’ve seen a gumtree add for a bloke in Rocko
who has heaps of them for $15ea. :-D

I've just taken a FG reading of the TPW I put down last week before going to work, apparently I've got a 22.57% wash... SG was 1.075 FG 0.900 = 22.57% is this normal for a TPW?

Doesn't sound right to me iffy... Couple of questions
- how are you measuring the sg/fg?
- did you follow the tried and proven recipe?
- I'm assuming you didn't use a turbo and up the sugar?
I use the t&p TPW recipe never had it finish much under 9.90

Hey iffy,
Sounds like ur off to a great start!
I've made a few tpw's lately and they reliably finish on 0.990
Maybe recheck your reading, that's probably where it's at. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It's pretty much standard, I just put about 280g of tp in and a bit more water... I'll take another FG reading in the morning and have a good look to make sure I'm reading it right.

Remember that you need to temperature correct the reading :handgestures-thumbupleft: my hydrometer works at 20C

Put your hydrometer in water at 20 degrees and see if it reads 1.000 :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I put down another TPW today, looking at the sg of this one I probably misread the hydrometer on the last TPW wash...

Done my first stripping run as well, from the 30'ish liters that went in I got the following (approximates):
400ml fores (being over cautious maybe)
1.3L @ 60%
1.3L @ 50%
2L @ 30%

I shut down when the alcomiter in the parrot was reading 20% aprox.
