Thanks heaps fellas really appreciate it.
There sure is some nice sounding rums and drinks to have a crack at.
I just need to get the final still design sorted out and start buying a few pieces at a time.
Sams thrown a spanner in the works now mentioning the other condensers lol.
I was pretty keen on the worm but now im not sure.
The Liebig looks easy enough to construct and I guess I could run a pump in the other keg to recycle the water.
Those shotgun condensers look exactly like a marine heat exchanger. Theyd be great by the sounds of them but a bit pricey for building at the moment.
Im sure id be able to make one.

Would a twin internal pipe Liebig be more efficient than the single pipe liebig?. running the twin to bump up efficiently?
Thanks again fellas
cheers cam :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi Cam welcome.

Go the patrol! lol

Liebig is your best bet, easy enough to make and sure is effective, I had a 2in pot w a liebig for a good year before the upgrade.

Cooling tank will need to be bigger than a keg, I use a 1000L IBC tank, anything below~400L might give you some grief. especially if you try to do back to back runs, recirculate with a $50 submersible pu :text-thankyoublue:

McRum is a great start, easy recipe and produces a great rum.

whoa 400 liters.
Roughly how much water would be used if you ran the hose straight from the tap?
Im thinking its a how long is a piece of string question, depending on size of the liebig, length, flow rate, how hot the boiler is cranked to.
say a couple of hundred liters? 1000 liters? 50 liters?

In the early stages when I was looking at the T500 I watched a you tube video of a kiwi/aussie bloke who did a run from start to finish.
The water coming out was a trickle and I think the run went for around 4 hours. so maybe a bath tubs worth of water.

Thanks again for the help and tips, still a lot more to read up on before anything goes ahead.
Ive been looking for food grade stainless suppliers on the net and second hand stainless places.

cheers cam

id say when I was doing it I used about 150-200lts. I tried to collect into bins then use on the garden but was a pain and got a 200lt barrel pretty fast. It works but does get hot at the end of the run. A IBC would be ideal

for a stripping run i use about 200L of water. I use to use a spa to circulate water :P but now its empty i fill up the washing machine, and put on a load, then the rest goes into a 200L barrel (usually 3/4 fills it) and I use that to do another load of washing, wash fermenters etc (if im not doing generations) and water the veggies for the week.
its easy to not waste the water running from the tap- just need to spend a bit more time

At the moment I'm just running straight from the tap... I just water the lawn/garden with it :)

Whenever the missus asks me to water the garden, I do a run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks fellas
Could a 44 drum which is about 200 liters do the trick with a bag of ice thrown it halfway and towards the end?
Or a few coke bottles that have been frozen throw those in while the run is underway.
I can get 44's from work but im think theres a place that still sells the blue plastic 44's

they dont have to be plastic but plastic would be better as they wont rust. Yeah I freeze about 5 x 1.25lt and throw them in if I want to do a run the next day also drain about a 1/4 out and fill it back up with the bottles in there. It works but it does get hot by the end of the run and you cant do back to back runs or even a run the next day without trying to cool it.

seen people used to set up old car radiators in the loop but I guess IBC is only $50-150 depends where you can get them so kind of not worth the effort to buy a drum and radiator then wire up the fan and put it in the loop if you can get 1000lt IBC.

I know some one with one but its a fair drive and havnt picked it up. Though cousin inlaw said he has a tank that would fit in my ute about 1.8m heigh at the house he bought and doesnt want so might get that sounds like it might be 2000lt tank maybe :handgestures-thumbupleft: if not would have to be 1000lt at least by his description

Yeah I mucked around with the radiator thing for a while, did ok but the ibc is great, turn the pump on at the beginning of the run, flick it off at the end... no worries :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft: :D

edit.. spelling

Yep ya can get em dirt cheap sometimes too :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You may end up moving to an IBC if you find the smaller tank (44gal) is heating too fast, or if you think it would work you could always connect a number of 44's together inline, outlet from one side and return to the other :handgestures-thumbupleft: Or then again you could always just get an IBC :laughing-rolling:

Jut a quick question, Ive been exploring the forum/site.
The 5 star distilling shop.
Where is it located?
is the stainless food grade?
Theres some fricken sexy looking stuff on there and would make life a lot easier to find bits and pieces instead of spending hours googling.

I thought I had an easy run with getting stainless fittings through work, but after speaking to the welder and another mate they strongly suggest food grade stainless for the build.
Im not sure if hour suppliers do food grade.
anyway soem feed back on the site shop would be great
cheers cam
