Humpty Doo NT

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Humpty Doo NT

Postby rumpig01 » Fri May 09, 2014 1:02 pm

Hi All
I was brewing some 2 years ago but stopped due to lack of time. Now coin poor I'm reigniting my old passion but this time I'm going to try and improve things to make my life easier and more efficient like running 3 fermentation at the same time so I can produce 3 times the spirit so in theory only have to brew 1/3 as often.
I have a kit from a brew shop but this time I'm looking in to making some mods.
I also want to investigate this tomato paste idea that I read here.

Welcome mate!

Going by your name, I think you'll want to upgrade to a pot still and start churning out some real rum :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You may as well leave that Z filter in the box it came in, though...

Welcome

I have 4 30L fermenters atm and they are never empty long

Currently looking into getting some big drums 200L and having a few of them going

1 Rum only
1 Bourbon only
1 Whiskey only
1 Vodka only

Then use the 30L ones for beer/cider or expiriments and brandy :p

Welcome Humpty :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Like you time poor is an issue for me as well so I've been running 3 x fermenters and doing stripping runs etc.
The last TPW I did I had 5 x 30L fermeners on the go...on the kitchen bench :D I don't think I can get away with that again.

But just today I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to an FSD bubbler to save even more time, skip the strip and just single pass over 4 bubble plates ;-)

Cheers,

Mech

So the size of the still you go for depends on:
1. Size of your wallet
2. The amount of time you are prepared to spend operating it per session
3. The amount of grog you need to get off it to satisfy your needs

For me a (100L) 5hr run from turning it on to turning it off sounded just perfect, for that I needed a 6" FSD bubbler.

I'd be guessing here and someone with practical knowledge can confirm or correct but I'd think that the 4" FSD would do 50L in 5hours from start to finish, so a good fit for the 50L keg boiler. That should give you about 20 bottles of 40% booze :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I was running my 2" both days on the weekend and it was just chewing up too much time and emptying the 50L to top it back up again was a pain as I hadn't gotten around to installing a drain.
I modified the 50L keg last week giving it 2 new element ports and a drain port and built a 3" stainless VM for neutrals but buy the end of the week I just thought frack this I want RUM!

I run my FSD 4" on a 50 ltr keg with 2x 2400 elements 2 for heat up and 1 for the run and I am done and dusted in 3 hours. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just remember mr many is an old hand now with a fair few runs under his belt, I'd suggest anyone on L plates aim a bit lower until they get rid of the training wheels :handgestures-thumbupleft:

But just to be a smart arse :laughing-rolling: I get through 100L of wash with my 6" rig from start up (cold wash) to having a sip after rinsing the boiler in under 5 hours :teasing-tease:
