Another Kiwi

Postby Shoutatthesky » Sun May 25, 2014 12:44 pm

Hi all, I'm Adam from NZ.

I've been distilling for a few years with a Still Spirits reflux still. Had enough of these sugar, water and turbo yeast washes. Keen on learning about traditional distilling methods. I would love to make some apple schnapps but whisky is my focus.

Look forward to sharing ideas with you all.

My still is a fairly old one. Spirits Unlimited is a different company I believe. Still spirits no longer sell the model I have.

This is not my picture but you get the idea. I've had a good run out of my one but it's time to move on to the next step.

Still in the research stage at the moment. I was thinking of making a full sized cardboard model and using that for a template. And maybe making some small copper items like a funnel to practice my soldering. My build will require a fair amount of copper and I want to take my time and do it right.

I only shout at empty chilly bins. When they're full of lovely beverages I talk to them in a soft and soothing voice.

Welcome to the forums mate. I admire your plans to build a traditional style pot, I think if you combine the old school look with a bit of modern touch you'll be onto something :)

Have a crack at putting together a funnel and a parrot to hone your soldering skills before you put a torch to any copper sheet :)

As for recipes, try either the CFW, MacWhiskey or BWKO recipes in the Tried and Proven forum, and you'll be well on your way!

Hey Shoutatthesky, welcome to the world of the wise home brewers from a fellow Kiwi.
Leave your old home brew store still under the bench where it belongs and read, read, read, this forum to day dream and plan for your new copper still.
Buy a mapp/Lpg torch and some bernzo solder and flux from bunnings, visit a scrappy and just start working with copper... it gets easier after the more mistakes you make :handgestures-thumbupleft:
