afternoon C2H60,i decided to make my own spirits as brother in law was into it and cost.been at it for 14 months.have made up a fair bit of 40% spirits.i like whiskey/whisky but have made a range of all top shelf.have decades of drinking ahead of me and its maturing as time passes.collected various mt bottles to put true to label in also useing 16x 5lt demijohns.filled two cupboards and having a rest from it atm.winter down here re temp of wash does need watching all though I have a base heater.after reading a few posts here I realise I know sweet f all about it.ok thanks,victor

afternoon sam, ive made just about all top shelf flavours,i have a question,the last 3 washes I produced 18lt of 60% spirits,i allways use smoother and found that 60% goes cloudy when its cold but clear when temp rises.i made up whiskey and had to put through a coffee filter and a jelly was removed.so higher % stops smoother being absorbed?.thanks,victor

40% and 60% with smoother,60% goes cloudy when cold

Smoother? I assume that's some kind of added... Stuff?

Most of us here tend to stay away from the home brew shop products and methods, in favour of making a cheaper, higher quality spirit. I think you're about to learn more than you thought there was to know about this hobby :)

no its only an air still 4lt.but still (no pun intended) why does 40% absorb the smoother glucose but at 60% when cold it goes cloudy.can only be smoother.higher ahv is doing it why?

G'day Victor.
There is a lot to be learned by reading through the various threads posted in our Air Still section. Many people here started off with those stills.
A lot can be learned from the mistakes and successes of those who have used Air Stills in the past.

Smoother is normally glycerine.
One of the first things I bought 5 years ago...still have it and never needed it.

it is a smoothing syrup still spirits product.glucose syrup (from corn) .
